Opinions greatly appreciated on whether I should buy a 17 or 18 sr5 4x4 dbl cab long bed.
    Thank you in advance.

Same truck, different year. Shop by price or color if that's your thing. Otherwise... meh. No one but you will ever know the difference if you don't show 'em the title.

I'm partial to the adaptive cruise you can get in the 18's, makes traffic a trivial affair. Otherwise, no real difference really.

I would check options and see how they stack up.

Wasn't there some new safety feature going into the 2018's that would make it much harder to lift via new suspension? I don't remember what it was exactly but there was a thread on it not too long ago. Something to consider if you're wanting to customize your new truck anyhow.

It all comes down to your priorities. Are you most interested in saving money on your purchase? If so, a 2017 may give you more room to negotiate.

Are you most interested in the having the latest model year and latest technologies? If so, a 2018 offers more considering standard availability of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) across the Tacoma trims.

I was trying to make the same decision, 17 or 18. I have decided to wait on the 18. I am trading in my old reliable 2005 Prerunner Sport with 235,000 reliable miles on her. I plan on getting a TRD Offroad 2wd as I live in Central Texas so no snow and don't plan on any hardcore offroading, so I will save the extra $3K and 1 MPG over the 4wd and still have the locker if needed.
    Reason for the 2018:
-I want the Tech Package as I really like the blind spot monitoring on my other cars. I don't want the bundled Premium package on 17's as I hate Sunroofs and the other premium items are not worth it to me for the extra $2K.
    - I think the Safety Sense is good to have
-Hopefully all the little issues have been worked out by Toyota even though none were really a big deal as some forum members make it out to be.

My special order truck will be a 2018 DCSB, TRD Offroad 2wd, White, Black Fabric, Predator Steps, and no dealer add on BS.

Not a shopper, as I don't care to have a 3rd gen. (and not for the 'common' reasons people normally speak of, so no offense to anyone)

But I'm wondering if any '18 models can be had w/o the TSS, and if so, what level does it become standard in.

nope . standard in all models now. You can turn it off but it is standard and you will be paying for it.

And will this order be placed outside of the Gulf States region? Because like the SE region, they seem deadset (region, maybe not a specific dealer) on certain combinations not making it thru, regardless of what 'build your Toyota' says.

    Best of luck!

2 dealers told me they can get my truck as ordered. If they try to pull the typical slime ball dealer moves, I'll keep the Gen 2 and roll it up to another 100,000 miles.

Hopefully that will be the case.

In Nov of '03 I ordered an '04 with a late Jan delivery. Nothing 'special', everything was on the list to be checked.

When it arrived, it had 3 significant items missing and it had 2 that I did not want. 'That's the way they are done at the port' was the answer.

Yeah, there were adjustments made. But here 14 years later it still reminds me never to order via SE again, because I keep hearing the same stories of this happening to others.

Best wishes to get exactly what you want.

    Best offer I received was $2,600 off sticker for a 17 sr5 auto v6 4x4 dbl. long.
Considering I managed $2,300 off my current 13 Prius mid year, not sure this is a great end of year price. I did have to drive 16 hrs. (SE region) For that deal though.
Whichever I choose, it will be difficult to go from 50 to 22 mpg.
Thank you all for your comments!

I wouldn’t expect much more, if anymore at all, taken off of the sticker price. I’d say you did well.
