I think I read somewheres on here (prolly from Chris4x4 in the oil change tutorial) that banging the oil filter against its mounting chingadera is not good for it ,since like all things toyota these days.... it aint what it used to be... i.e. aluminum. I could be completely wrong, but a sammich aint worth structural engine damage if that is the case. its in here somewhere>>>

Funny thing, all the major jobs I'm willing to singlehandedly tackle on a vehicle, I don't even change my own oil.:anonymous: Jiffy Lube and/or the dealer are just too cheap and convenient. I just check their work before I leave. When I sit here and think about it, I haven't changed my own oil in like 18 years. I've been driving for 20.

ha ha you know its because theres a subway along the way :D

seriously though why would you want to stab a screw driver into the filter? it shouldn't be that tight that you cant hand turn it, id rather just spend the 4$ for the cap wrench thing its not like your gonna only use it once.

Hey everybody. Just checking in. Had to put a new battery in the taco last Saturday. It still had the original from 2002! I'd say 8 years of service is pretty good on a Delphi.

Those filters can stick on there pretty good. Even though you put them on hand tight, they never come off that easy. Back in the day, the filters didn't have flat sides and fancy nuts built into them. The wrenches back then were crappy, at least the ones we owned. We always tried them first and if they worked, great. If they didn't, it was time to fire a screwdriver into the side of it.

Just put your man hands on it and spin the damn thing off! Or if your hands are too soft you can always use a pair of channel-locks.

I'll probably buy one this upcoming oil change, but taking it off by hand...IDK about that. Like Greg said they get pretty stuck on there.

Greg are u using synthetic? How much does an oil change cost you. I just find piece of mind knowing that it was done correctly. I usually spend $27 on Mobil-1 and $6 on a filter. I think the last time I went to jiffy lube it was close to $60.

Alex I guess it's just the 6cyl that have it located up top. Yea that thing is a beast. The couple times I took mine in for tire rotations and whatnot they always just rev mine up like its a joyride..At least they asked u.

Yes, I use synthetic. I've only had two oil changes on the Tacoma and the dealer did both. The first one was free and the second one was like $50-$60. You're basically paying $35 for stuff. For $20 extra, I feel it's worth it to let them do the dirty work. I just check the oil before I leave. I suppose you could even put a mark on your old filter if you wanted to make sure they change it. I actually kind of like my dealership here. They're good people. I wouldn't have them do any real work unless it's under warranty because they're so damn expensive but they are at least nice. I also don't have to mess with taking the oil to a disposal center.

When I was a kid, everyone would just seal up the old stuff in the quart bottles and throw it in the trash. Nobody that I know of took it to a disposal center. I don't even think they had disposal centers back then.

I understand how simple it is. I just don't do it. I guess the biggest hang up for me is taking the fluid to a disposal center. Just really don't want to mess with it.:notsure:

Hell, I couldn't afford the red top. Got a Duralast Gold with an 8 year warranty for 95, I think.

I keep my used oil in the drain pan thing and take it in when I go get supplies for the next time. Sure used oil sits in the garage for three months, but its sealed and out of the way.

So got the truck debadged and then painted them black. But didn't really like the blank look so put them back on. Here are some pics.
