    Also a good point. I've got a little handheld baofong HAM unit that blows the range of a tuned cb set away. They are like $30-$50 on Amazon. I think I got mine on sale for like $30. People shy away from ham due to supposedly needing a license, could be complex etc.

    But for the price they blow a cb away. And honestly if you're just using it for simplex IMO you don't need a damn license. Back in the day when people were building their own units ya you could put out a shitload of wattage over the air and damage personal or commercial equipment. Buying a premanufactured unit they don't have that problem. .Gov doesn't need my info on a damn list (and $ no matter how small the amount) to use a radio. / Rant

    Those are nice. If your tail gate locks, you have a complete, lockable bed and I used to stand on mine to clean the roof of the truck. I had the tri-fold version though, not the roll up.

    Most of the west coast has gone ham for that reason. Technically you do need a license for ham... but its really easy. Spent a few nights using one of the apps on my phone, and then went to a "review session" right before my test- all the questions are publicly available so you just cram the question and correct answer and good to go. A lot of people do use them with out the license... but its not ideal, especially when mixing licensed and non licensed users since technically its not legal for licensed users to talk to non licensed users... and they risk loosing their license...

    I get the big brother aspect though... your name address and call sign become public knowledge...

    But... for less then $100 bucks I had a baofeng hooked up to an external antenna and could hit repeaters 15+ miles away, no tuning issues or anything. Other advantage is I can pick up most FD/PD/Public Safety/Aircraft frequencies for monitoring and receive the weather band channels.

    I had a number of local active repeaters, so I bumped up to a full mobile setup pushing 50+ watts and it was amazing how much clearer transmit and receive was then the baofeng. It also has a built in GPS and I can transmit my location if I want to or send/receive text messages.

    Either that or one of the light up antenna covers that makes it look like an 8 foot lightsaber!

    That's exactly what I want to do! Not sure where I want to mount the external speaker though. And I need to make sure I get one that has outputs for an external speaker and a PA horn.

    I really don't think the FCC is concerned with people using a glorified CB that's not handbuilt and putting out 4000000000 watts. Thats just me though. I guess ultimately it doesn't matter with our names/ likenesses all over the social medias, Backpage etc....:rofl:

    Edit: for kicks I've taken the example test online. Honestly 99% of that shit doesn't apply to people buying pre manufactured units. It is really directed at someone building their own. Which brings me back to the need for a license to use a beefed up radio in the first place for simple communication and not broadcasting
