One more thing, my gas mileage doesn't seem to be any better(20 - 20.5 mpg) However it did just turn cold and I've read that affects mpg in a negative way so maybe I actually did gain a mpg or two.

How's it been driving now that it's been a few weeks? Is you pinging still gone? Also, did you notice any power increase or improved responsiveness or MPG's?

It's been driving great. No pinging. I haven't really noticed any big difference in gas mileage or power, but the the weather has turned cold and therefore don't see a difference in mileage. I also drive the truck pretty conservatively and therefor don't really notice any power gains. I'm very happy with how the truck runs and drives now.

So the solution here is to clean the top end build up and swap the injectors?

How were you able to clean out certain ports without stuff falling down into the engine?

Yep. I started to put the old injectors back in after cleaning the intake build up. Had I done that we would know which one for sure. But I suspect the build up was the main culprit.

Sweet. I'm guessing I will be able to do all of this when I change out my valve cover gaskets? Or do i need to further break down the engine?

Valve cover gaskets requires only removing the air intake. Removing the intake manifold is a bit more work. You have to remove throttle body and egr valve just to get started. Not trying to talk you out of it, just don't want you thinking your going to whip it out in 30 min. ;)

okay so I'm coming back to this and quickly ran through the thread again, and it looks to me like you removed the intake manifold and cleaned basically all of the "air ports/holes" (layman's terms) that were accessible after removing the intake, including the intake itself, the throttle body and EGR valve? If so, I'm going to have to do that when I replace the valve cover gaskets anyways because I have to remove the entire manifold to get to the valve covers. Does this sound right? I think I'm going to make a new thread asking about replacing the injectors while I'm there. I called a shop and they said they hardly ever replace injectors on the 3.4L... but who knows if mine are getting bad or not.

Sounds about right. Not sure how the 3.4 will be but my 2.7 had an enormous amount of buildup in the lower intake runners right where it bolts to the head. The build up extended into the head too.

At that mileage, I would either replace them or have them cleaned and flow tested. I swapped my injectors on my 3rz around the same mileage and noticed a difference in drivability and responsiveness. I had a 3.4 back in the day that ping like crazy too. I wish i could've gone back in time to do the same thing.

Random question, were you running any type of special air filter? Or just the normal paper ones?

Yeah, I'm thinking I should just bite the bullet and do it while I'm in there, to save time in the long-term.

I've ran paper filter and the original owner had a paper filter in it when I bought it. Truck was bone stock when I bought it. I suspect that he ran crappy gas and maybe that contributed to the build up some.

Oil catch cans are supposed to help prevent a lot of the build up from oil being recirculated from the valve cover back into the intake
