For all you wheelies out there. I know little about rims and tires. I have 17” 8.5 methods with 4.5” backspacing wrapped on 285 Falkens. I want to run a full size spare down below and already aware of the mod that allows it.

My question is do i need to get that same dimension rim to fit with no rubbing on my truck? I dont think a black method would fair very well tucked under there getting rocks chipping away at it. What are my options?

If you are talking a full sized "exactly what you already have on the ground" wheel then put it in the back somewhere. If you just need something to get you out of a jam for a minute, then don't worry about it.

I need somethong to get me back on anhour-2 hour trail. Probably a full size as maybe i will need to get out in 4wd and two size rims are good for price saving but from what i understand you will ruin gears with a different size spare in 4wd. Maybe im wrong. The bed is not an option for me. Maybe i will just get a matching rim and let rocks ding it up. May never use it anyway.

I actually have my 2015’ 17” sport wheel. But my thoughts are on that i would not get the backspacing i need to clear it withouth my cmc etc. maybe my 17” factory rim would work wrapped in a 285 matching tire. Wonder how id find out what the 15’ sport 17” rim dimensions were.

Specs should be on the back of the wheels face. If you take a pix of the numbers I can tell you...

Shoot save the money on an extra wheel and do the CMC and put the same rubber on your sport wheel.

I have no need for a cmc as of now i have zero rubbing at full turn over bumps etc with 285’s im a lucky one. But if i went that route would two different spacing rims with same tires and 17” work the same or would they pull push away from eachother.

Why wouldn't you just put it on a back wheel instead? Don't have to chop anything then. Yeah it sucks to have to swap 2 tires instead of one should you blow a front tire. Fwiw I have a matching Fn wheel for my spare

That is an option in emergencys that may work too. Where do you keep your spare? My best option would be to just spend the 150$ or so on the method rim and even if it gets rock chips in paint it still is just a spare i dont plan on a 5 tire rotation. I guess that is option 1 and option to is seeing if my 15’ sport 17” wheel works which im looking into.

    Thanks for the input everyone

I keep mine under the truck for now. Bought for $100 off craigslist, the tire is worth more than the rim by 2.5x

Im thinking my best bet is to just wrap the 17” sport oem spare rim with matching tire if it will fit. I feel better now knowing theres options. Did you do the full size spare mod and chop exhaust?

    Which mod are you suggesting?
I have 285/70/17 Grabber X3's on Ray10's on all four corners. Gave away stock wheels/tires.
My spare is the factory tire 265/65/17 on factory steelie wheels.
I'd like to buy a matching size tire, but I do not know if it would fit at the same location where the current spare tire is.
I do not mind using the same spare steel wheel if possible.
    What are my options?
