I switched to 0w-30 my last oil change as it will last all through winter. I've been using Mobil1 full synthetic for years though in 5w-30 so I don't notice a "big" difference in performance or start-up. It got cold here (hit just below 0° a few days and stayed in the single digits a few others for the better part of two weeks. Start-up seemed the same between the 5 and 0 but they are roughly equal in price so whatever you can get just make sure it's a name brand synthetic and filter.

@ShuggieTaco if you don't change your own oil you have to consult with the shop, most won't let you bring your own supplies as they make good profit on the bulk they have in stock. They also overcharge for synthetic changes, or won't do them as your engine doesn't specifically call for a synthetic type.

I used to use 0w-30 Mobil 1 for a couple of years. I did not notice any negative effects from doing so. I have since switched to using whatever is cheapest, since I don't drive my truck as much so I'll have to change my oil via a time interval rather than a mileage interval.

So the type of oil won’t change the knocking or anything like that?

Like valve tick? I never noticed much of a change between different weights. Sure, fresh oil no matter what will help a bit, but after a while it's all the same.

I've been told that 0w-30 vs 5w-30 uses a better base oil to achieve the superior (although not by much, if any) cold flow properties.

I wouldn't hesitate to use either, whatever is cheaper. The 3.4 is super easy on oil anyways.

There’s definitely a noticeable tick no matter what temperature the engine. That and my understanding is the Tacoma tick that will always be there. I’m talking about a little bit of a knocking sound while engine is warming up. It’s very very slightly audible and you can only hear it if you’re listening for it. No one else would notice it that is not listening for it.

Well I was gonna blame the drainback valve, but both of those are good/decent filters so :notsure:

That’s why I switched from a junk filter bc someone mentioned that might help. I’ll know more in the morning.

The knock is really not there once warm. I was just concerned some type of damage was being done. I just don’t like any noises coming from the engine. Is there anything else i can do to eliminate all noise at start up to where is just smooth.

@Logger i took a video of my truck this morning when I started it. I can’t figure out how to get it to upload. Says not compatible or something like that. I beginning to think it’s normal. It’s not noticeable unless you’re right up on the truck or in the cab. It’s also an intermittent once warm. Very faint.

I had my neighbor help me change my spark plugs yesterday. He happens to be a mechanic. I had him listen after we change the plugs when I started it up and he said everything sounds normal to him. I don’t know now if there’s an issue or not.

:burnrubber:No issues with the tick!, it sounds like you keep youre fuel system well maintained, if so the injectors are well known for scaring people as they tick from opening and closing real loud if they are clean. It usually goes away after warm up significantly but is still heard when idling next to a wall that echoes. If you are still concerned check the valve clearances but usually they stay in spec for a looong time.
