Yes, I know why it automatically switches to fresh when you put it on defrost. I get migraines and one of my triggers is exhaust fumes. Does anyone know of a way to disable the fresh air function? I really need to be able to turn it off and on while on defrost. This is really the only thing I really hate about my truck.

On the second gen putting the vent on floor position allowed a little air go through the defrost vents. Try that with ac and heat on to defrost

I needed full Defrost today. It was 18-20 degrees and snowing. I miss the lever on my 89...

Yeah, it's annoying. What annoys me is when you switch it BACK to whatever position you had it in before, it does not re-enable recirculate.

Pulling in outside air doesn't bother me TOO much... I've got some allergies, but not that bad. I just don't like the SMELLS that come in from outside sometimes.

Cant you turn on AC max and set the temp where you want it. Instead of the defrost button, use the blower setting that blows feet and windshield.

Being able to be in total control of the climate system is one thing I miss, too. My '91 didn't even have A/C in it so you'd think if there was ever an excuse for forcing you to select fresh would have made a lot of sense, but Toyota trusted the driver to make his own decision.

In this case I thought there was a way to get the climate control to let you pick, but perhaps I'm thinking of not making the A/C come on with defrost automatically. Which is what really annoys me personally.

Only having like 4 speed settings on the fan pisses me off. It’s odd. Low is too much sometimes...There should be 6 settings at least or an infinite knob where you pick the speed like many cars..

The whole recirculate and fresh air thing is odd. I think it has something to do with the compressor and how and when it is supposed to work.

You should have exactly ZERO exhaust fumes in the passenger compartment regardless of what your climate control is doing.

    That makes no sense.

I have exact same issue OP. Exhaust fumes trigger my migraines also. I can smell every vehicle on the road if recirculation is off.

For defrost I must use the defrost/floor setting. This allows recirculation to be active and defrost.

Did you look at the link in post #9? It’s the mod directions for a 2nd gen truck to give complete manual control over the recirc feature.

Wheather or not it makes sense to you, vehicle exhaust contains carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide, particulates, and other poisons. These poisons can cause brain damage and other health issues.
Exhaust fumes are not good for people. You ever wonder why exhaust fumes trigger your migraines?? :notsure:

Yes and if a vehicle in front of you sitting with exhaust coming out is then sucked into your cab from not recirculating it causes issues. It can and does happen.

Defrost goes to fresh air by default and can only recirculate if you chose the defrost/floor option.
