Yeah I think I'm gunna. He even spent the extra for the silver coils which I think looks nicer. I know the billies are the shocks but who make the silver springs?

Great thread. Lots of great info, stories, experiences, advice. Can be a bit confusing cuz I'm sure people get biased towards their needs and maybe what they had a preconceived impression about, but regardless, the info was all very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

I think my final decision has boiled down to ToyTec Ult w LR UCAs. I got the discount code already and am anxious to order.....soon!!! :)

    2 questions:

    1) does anyone have a good DIY install thread and/or does Toytec kit come w one?
    2) if I'm going to start off using my exising OEM wheels (17") and hope to updgrade tires to P285/70R17, do I need wheel spacers and if so, what size and where to purchase?

Just a question I am still debating lifts, can Toytec install OME 885 and shocks for a price? I don't want to have to compress springs and want to keep all my stock parts for later if needed. 885 and OME shocks give 1.75lift and OME Dakars give you 2.75 lift; can you remove a OL leaf to level this out?
I know I could install the 10mm top spacer but would rather not.
I am still reading and learning!

Meaford , here's a novel for you on the subject of the leaf removal for the dakars , http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/suspension/74548-dakar-leaf-pack-remove-3rd-leaf-not.html

After reading a great deal about the different lifts I believe I am going to go with new UCA's and the OME kit with 886’s (I will be mounting a winch)… I have not had the rear spring TSB done and I am looking for advice as to which way to go here. Should I go with the AAL for non TSB or get the rear TSB done by Toyota and go with the TSB AAL’s, or should I just go with the complete CS047R OME Dakar leaf pack and not deal with the time and trouble of getting Toyota to do the rear spring TSB? I have on order an ARE MX fiberglass shell which will add more weight to the rear when installed in a few weeks. I want to maintain or improve cargo capacity while improving off road and on road handling. If I understand correctly the OME Dakar’s would give me more off road articulation in the rear then either the TSB or non TSB AAL’s?

Darrick if you would be so kind as to send me a ToyTec discount code I would be most appreciative.... thanks...

FWIW, I'm not happy with either the ride quality or articulation of my current TSB and AAL setup, but it will do for now because I can't afford any better at the moment. I sagged like crazy with my usual expedition/recovery/outdoor loads, but the AAL/TSB did help in this regard... it's just not a better ride (and definitely worse unloaded).

The Dakars are going to be an upgrade for me down the road, and if you have the coin now I'd say you ought to just go for it, versus wasting any time and money to install an AAL if you think articulation and load carrying capabilities might be something important to you. I put my AAL set in myself so it wasn't a big deal to blow $80 on the AAL versus the cost of Dakars, so installation might factor into your budget as well....

Thanks ABT, this is just the feedback I was looking for. I knew the Dakars will be better, I'm just trying to get some idea how much better and if it’s worth the money. Getting the rear TSB done will be a pain as I live 45 minutes from the nearest Toyota dealer and getting a ride home and/or waiting for them to do the work do not make this option appealing. I definitely want the articulation as I plan on wheeling occasionally, I do carry loads fairly often and I always drive enthusiastically…. So I want the best ride I can afford… I would like to do these mods just once; I believe that ultimately it is less expensive that way.

You bet! I also live about 45 mins from my dealer so the TSB was a pain. I had hoped it would relieve the whole sag issue for me, but it still sagged a lot with a good load. The AAL helps but the ride does suck compared to stock. I have heard nothing but good things about the Dakars on the other hand, so I'm saving up. Because I like to go off roading frequently, I'd get them just for improved articulation even if the ride wasn't bad with the AAL and/or even if the ride won't feel better running Dakars.

Is it possible to install the OME and a pair of LR UCA's with the stock wheels and tires? Will the UCA hit the stock wheels or tires?

Then down the road up grade to some off set wheels and 285x75x16 or something similar?

I'm having a bad day so please read between the lines. If I'm a bit blunt, sorry.

This is a matter of personal opinion.

My dealer is 1 hour away due to heavy traffic. At the time, the TSB was not extended to the 2008 models. Service manager performed the legwork, handled any paperwork to make it happen, and had things installed in one afternoon.

Getting the truck back, I noticed a slight firming of the ride, but forgot about it within a week. Seemed to be fine when I put in a load of boulders.

Switching to OME fronts and Wheeler's AAL in rear, I noticed a bigger difference. Truck is more responsive in recovering from bumps - if I went back to stock, I'd assume the truck would feel sloppy in comparison.

I also drive a '99 Dodge 2500 diesel and have borrowed a '97 Deville on occassion. Comparing the two, the Dodge is lumbering and harsh, Toyota is nimble and pronounced. The Cadillac is lumbering and soaks up anything.

Decide what you want to be driving. You can't have it all. You don't see Cadillac guys complain about their offroad experience.

I'll repeat what was told to me about the Dakars:
Think about how much weight you are looking to carry and how often. Be realistic. You can't compete with a full size truck, stop trying. Use the truck for what it's good at (offroad vs. heavy hauling)
Dakars are better for offroad, but how serious are you? (FWIW, I ride about once a month and have successfully made it through a rainy black diamond rock garden at Brown's Camp on OME lift with stock tires)

I'm not talking you out of it, just making sure you are firm in your decision. You may have better areas to spend in, or might be extreme enough with your vehicle that you should skip OME/Toytec and look at King/ICON.

You are right, it is a personal opinion and perhaps I could have been more clear-- I am into regular off road expedition/extended camping trips, so the Dakars make sense for someone who uses their vehicle as I do. It's not about trying to overload the truck or compete with a full size. The TSB setup with AALs is just not going perform as well as the Dakars if you want to use your truck as I do... the Dakars are ideal for my type of use, so I will get them when I can afford them. I'm mechanically inclined so $80 was not a bad stop-gap for the time being. AALs additionally do nothing to benefit articulation, which is something mountaintop said he wants, along with improved cargo capacity and the fact that he is going to be running a shell. So, I'm just sharing my experience with the guy... he sounds like he might be doing what I do and I'm not satisfied with my setup and hope he can benefit from knowing how I feel. And I do have to second that if you have the need, you could skip OME/Toytec and go straight to Icon... I'd do that myself if I could afford it as well.

Yep comment about Dakars wasn't directed at you, it was a general "ask yourself" thing. It can be hard to discern at what point the bump up to the next level is justified, and I really hate that all I can give is a few samples and opinions rather than "X product gives a bed capacity of X pounds, your planned weight is Y pounds..." and such.

Thanks to both ABT and Chickenmunga for the feedback. I am not overly concerned with load capacity just don’t want to diminish it in any way. I have a utility trailer when I need to haul heavy stuff but I just don’t want to be hitting the bump stops when I’m loaded with camping gear, dogs, kids, coolers and assorted other stuff. I do not off-road as much as I would like (schedules with girlfriend, kids, work etc.) but if I am making expensive changes I would prefer that my truck is more capable off-road than less. I didn’t buy a DC LB for its prowess off-road (LB because I must be able to sleep in the back) but if I can improve it’s abilities with the mods I am doing then that’s all the better. I want to lift this truck foremost to make it more capable off-road and secondly because I think they look so much better with a little lift. I will not be doing any extreme off-road stuff but want to make this rig reasonably trail worthy and not get high centered too often (skid plates and sliders are next on the list)…

As for the higher end King/ICON, I looked at these but for my purposes I think the Toytec/OME will suffice. I will probably do the TC UCA’s for alignment and the additional articulation and most likely the Dakars for the articulation (not to mention not dealing with the time and trouble of Toyota rear spring TSB). Hopefully my on-road ride will not be degraded but a little stiffer ride from increased spring rates is not a problem for me. Ultimately I am looking for better trail manners overall and to look way cool in my new lifted Taco...

    Thanks again for the response...

And opinions are what I'm looking for... I'm new to the Taco scene and I take others opinions and the products specs and prices and decide what I think is best for me... But all the info and opinions I find here are invaluable...

I am addicted to TW… I wonder is there a 12 step program for people like me… Hi, my name is Dennis and I’m a Taco World addict!!!
