It is a bunch of $$$. When I was wrenching the only trucks we saw with electrical issues for engaging were ones that the actuators got drowned in water for extended periods of time or were never used. I haven't had any issues out of my truck and it's closing in fast on 200k. When I was looking I ran into a couple that weren't shifting into 4wd but got under the truck and tapped the actuator on the t-case and it went into 4wd.

It was very apparent that I need to do it when I was at green ridge and it was snowing. On the way, we were on the highway and I went to slow down and ABS was going nuts. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as other stories I've read on here where they'll slide on through an intersection.

Excuse the dumb question, but what actually caused the abs to go crazy? Snow in the sensor? Asking out of curiosity

Mainly the ice. It senses a wheel slipping and is like "HOLY SHIT GUYS. WE'RE SLIDING SO LET'S ENGAGE ABS" and then your brakes are useless and you just slide on your merry way. It can also happen in loose sand/gravel while offroad.

Isn't that the point of abs to pulsate the brakes so that it gives the brakes with the grip the braking power. I do not quite understand why if a brake locks up and is sliding you would want them to keep sliding. Back in the day before ABS was standard we were taught to pulsate the brakes ourselves to prevent an uncontrolled skid like that.

The point of ABS is to pulsate the brakes so if you lock up, you're still able to steer. Offroad, we don't generally need that. Here's a really good video demonstrating all that. If you don't feel like watching it, it basically says that ABS doesn't shorten stopping distance in the snow.

Interesting. Although on ice ABS or not if you get into a slide you are screwed.

But braking just as hard as he did with the first stop engaging ABS I bet a non ABS would go just as far or further than the ABS engaged distance. I agree with him that Careful braking and paying attention can work to shorten your braking distance. The guy also says that it's pretty much up to you and using the proper driving style for the terrain and not to rely on the vehicle to do what you should do. Also ABS in the wet is beneficial for helping to keep from hydro planing even in light braking.

It's like in racing (because I can relate this to ABS) if you go in to hot into a corner and understeer because of loosing traction you'll be slower where if you are paying attention and go in at the correct speed for the tires you'll be faster. So in a stomp on the brakes emergency stop the ABS prevents the tires from loosing traction thus keeping the the traction for braking up. Now in controlled braking like he demonstrated it works. It all comes down to paying attention and braking correctly for the scenario and not being a dummy. I will have to look further into this.

We didn't have all these "crutches" to help us drive we had to do the driving there was no parallel park assist, cameras and blind spot monitoring, etc. Thus making us much more in tune with driving. Don't even factor in the cell phones and driving thing that just adds to it.

yeah man I agree, know ur vehicle and know how to drive it, simple as that. the only thing I actually like is the back up cam and that's for backing up to a trailer. but I spent years backing up to one by myself with no help, its not hard, the hitch is in the middle of ur vehicle so aim the middle of the trailer for the middle of the vehicle haha the only thing nice about the cam is now I don't have to get out and see how close I am to the hitch get back in, back up a few more inches and check again aahaha

Give me a Lair price? Haha

People on here know what they are worth. That’s why when I sell something I always go FB or CL first because they usually pay more.

I like the look of soft toppers just not sure if I want to risk the canvas and plastic windows vs fiberglass and glass.

I am still getting use to the tiny mirror taco backing to a trailer I have a hard time judging distance and where I am at as far as centering goes. I got spoiled by my super duty's mirrors. I learned to back up with my mirrors and not turning around to look that just gives you a blind spot plus you don't see what's going on with the front of your vehicle. The camera is nice though to get that tongue right over the ball so no getting out to check that last inch or so.

If you're worried about theft just remember this a locked door only keeps a honest man honest if someone wants something they will smash cut whatever to get it.

yeah I use to turn around and back up with a trailer until a man up at the lake was like, a real man would only use his mirrors hahaha so I started backing up using my mirrors and got damn good at it. I cant back up just looking at the camera, like u said, its great for getting the tongue right over the ball. some of my friends back into parking spots using just the screen and I think its weird af haha doesn't feel natural to me lol

Agreed! There's so many different variations for the different optioned trucks, so I'm glad I finally found the one that works on my truck.

I have had experiences in the snow where I hit the brakes and actually gain speed because the abs WILL NOT put any braking to the wheels. I almost slide into the back of someone during the last storm because one or two wheels hit slush and it went bezerk...where as if I would have been able to drag the other two tires, I probably would have stopped almost dead in my tracks.

Since you have an OR it's even easier! You really should do it.

I failed my drivers license test the first time I took it because the DMV guy wanted to see me turn around and look back to back up. When I argued that truck drivers don't and I did just fine the way I did it he got really pissed and said I could leave now. Went back the next day got a different DMV guy passed with flying colors doing the exact same thing when I told him what the other guy said about failing he just shook his head and laughed.
