So it doesn't have another aluminum sheet over it? On my version there is also a honeycomb insert in between the two aluminum walls.

 

It looks like they just adhered the panel from the inside. Hence why I have a leak issue

I'd be afraid of damage to the tent with that thing.

 

I like the positivity lol... Im pretty cautious with stuff like this, if there are clearance issues at the vent I will just remote mount it somewhere else and keep it in a bin.

I'm just gonna hang it outside and put some water thingies here and there. But if I'm gonna have a shower, I'm gonna do it outside the truck.

The biggest issue with these types of heaters is keeping a 3-foot clear space above the heater and at least 12 inches from anything flammable or can potentially melt. The tents are fire retardant, but that's just to keep you from dying fast vs repeated use under high heat.

I'd consider making one of these shower stalls.

I like that shower stall... the price is pretty up there. There has to be a good way to DIY something similar.

Maybe just using a 4' awning and stuffing a shower curtain inside the with it.

 

I mean it's just aluminum, tack welded hinges, some quick drying tent material, ykk zippers, and a bulb seal. Could be a weekend project... or just get a privacy tent.

 

I'd love to know how this works for you. I want to get a hot water system once I pickup the Habitat. I can't find it now, but I had found a build (in an rv or van) where someone mounted one inside a cabinet. Didn't have anything inside the cabinet that could melt, but was still closed up in a wooden box with just a few vents in it. He had to bypass the carbon monoxide alarm cause it kept going off, but it didn't burn anything down in the year he had it. I'm in no way saying this was safe or smart, just that nothing caught fire or got singed.

Another build I saw, I think in a small van, had a custom cabinet in which the owner mounted a similar water heater. He added a set of these for ventilation:

He also setup the control panel so you could not use it or turn it on without the back door open.

 

My current plan was to bend a tent pole into a Ushape and have brackets on side of habitat L track that hold it, and just hang a shower curtain off that. I am waiting for some aluminum stock to come in to build the brackets. I think it should work out pretty well and be very compact. Once I test it out Ill be sure to make some comments on it good or bad.

I was considering possibly building some type of aluminum cabinet... Still not 100% sure exactly where I will be mounting it. That will be determined once I get the water tank mounted, and I actually get this thing in my hands (supposed to be here tomorrow)... From the reviews it doesn't sound all that menacing... people mention that the top where it vents gets "warm to the touch" Im kind of hoping to just get away with some sort of aluminum heat shield but again I want to test it out myself on full blast for a half hour or so to see how hot it can get... We will be showering outside in any case, and will just leave the rear hatch open so the oxygen levels shouldnt be an issue.

 

Got the roof L track mounted yesterday. I don't really plan on carrying stuff up here although its nice to have the option to if needed. It will be a very convenient spot to hang stuff while tent is deployed at camp, lanterns, wet towells, toiletry roll, etc.





Also got the tankless water heater in the mail, It is a little bigger than I had anticipated, and therefore will most definitely not be permanent fixture in the habitat, beer can for scale.




I built an aluminum heat shield for it that attaches to the interior L track (don't have finished pictures). But it is easily removed with two bolts.

Of course I had to open it up to see how things worked in there, Looks like a well built unit and Im confident it will be easily repairable if something stops functioning.



Still haven't had a chance to test it out as I need some D batteries, and a male-female hose adapter. Hoping to give it a shot today and monitor temps closely, although I don't foresee there being any issue with the heat shield, especially since the tent will be open when we use it, so there is plenty of clearance above it.

 

How are you mounting the L track. I saw you drilled 3/8 holes. 40 to be exact.

 

Yes actually in total Im well over 100 holes now... each 4' section has 10 holes, there are four 4' sections on exterior, four on interior, and two 6' lengths on roof.

Once the 3/8 hole is drilled, you hammer in a 1/4 - 20 threaded insert, they have an interference fit, and then you use the tool I posted earlier to set the nut. Then a 1/4-20 stainless bolt.

...ive got a few issues to work on. i made a refrigerator slide with plywood and heavy duty drawer slides. it is bolted thru a layer of plywood and thru the plastic bed. works really well. i made it to fit my indelB and now have an ARB, that barely fits, i'll have to re-make this, and make a different over cabinet. the over cabinet is there as a step up from a shelf forward that facilitates the dog getting up into the sleep platform.
...i'm happy i ordered the base model with NO windows. i've placed some aluminum bubble wrap on the hatch door and the cab wall.
..biggest issue though, is the leaks i get through the interface of the bedrails and the shell. it is not a habitat problem, but certainly a Toyota design problem. the bed design i suppose works, but since i have removed all of one wheel well liner, and part of the other, i've uncovered a weak design, and the tires throw lots of road water up to the non existent bed rails, which pours inside the bed. i have some ideas for a fix.
..also need to upgrade from the dakars, as i have too much overweight with the steel HC swing gate bumper and an 80lb spare wheel plus up to 6 gal of gas and a propane bottle. post #174

 

I haven't had water intrusion but more an issue with drafts when running a heater, and also a little bit of dust. I have gone through with some black silicone and filled a few of the small gaps. I bought a tailgate seal material as well I have yet to put on. I also just ordered a bunch of 1/16th ABS sheet to make some better wheel liners for trimmed fenders

Setting up a shower area on the side of habitat. The vertical aluminum bars are the mounts for my water tank, and I just drilled two small holes in the top of it, and it holds the collapsible tent pole that will hold a shower curtain.

 

You're going to need something to keep the curtain rod from collapsing.

 

Yes it will have a vertical pole holding the other side, I should note this design has yet to be vetted, just the first idea I had, and I often change things up several times, over several trips before settling on a final solution. I have another idea for a simple PVC frame that may be preferable as it would not require the vertical pole
