Thanks for the explanation. Well aware of ABS and how it works, but never really looked into the Yellow wire mod.

On early second gens (upto 09?), you could gen an optional LSD differential on the Sports and SR5 (may have been standard on Sports?). When they got rid of the option, they came out with the ABS based LSD that Bill described. If a yellow wire exists behind your glove box, cutting it probably won't net you any benefit because you don't have the ABS based LSD.

 

Let me reach out and see what I can come up with.
And a friend in Centreville works with the USFS as a backcountry trail crew member and probably the most experienced hand saw sharpener in the DMV.

Is this the same for 3rd gens? Seems like such a simple thing to do... I'd likely just put a switch in the glove box.

3rd gens (sr,sr5, sport) are kind of lucky that in 4lo it’s on by default...according to the thread below

We actually have traction control in 4lo by default. You can turn it off to have open diffs. This is according to this thread but I’m pretty sure when I’ve had it in 4lo I noticed traction control

I'm 2WD so it doesn't apply to me but there is a wierd mode if you hit the traction control button.

 

Not gonna lie, now Im a little confused. I thought this mod turned the ABS off. So what your saying is it only affects the 4LO. If I am out here on a wet or snow covered road and hit the brakes to lock them up and the ABS kicks on with the whole pulsing and everything that I hate, your saying doing this mod and flipping this switch its still gonna do that. I was under the impression that this mod canceled that so you are essentially turning it off.

Edit: Or is that the other mod with the wires on the drivers side? I think I may have just wasted my time with this message. Time to go back and re-read the threads I have had saved for awhile, waiting to do these mods.

 

Haha yeah all the traction control modes are confusing. I’ve never seen someone lay it all out for 2nd gens

Haha I was lucky enough to have no fancy traction control in my old 5lug Tacoma

 

AUTO LSD (2WD) is traction control with brakes but without any engine output regulation. The normal 2WD mode is 'TRAC' and uses both brakes and engine regulation (to limit excessive tire spin).

AUTO LSD is a more aggressive/ stronger limited slip for use IF you get stuck in snow or mud where one tire is slipping and the TRAC mode prevents enough engine torque to rotate the traction tire. VSC is also OFF in AUTO LSD up to 30 mph. Since VSC has been called the greatest advance to driving safety since the seatbelt, running with it off is not going to save you.
