Timing Belt, Water Pump, etc Parts?

Anybody have a list of all the stuff needed for the timing belt, water pump change? A quick search didn't turn up anything. I also understand there at least used to be someone on the forum who sold kits for such things. Anybody know who that is by any chance?

What am I forgetting? Not sure I need to bother with the last 3, but maybe it's worth it while I'm there?

I could use a tool or 2 as well if anyone knows a good source for those - Harmonic Balancer Tool and a crank pulley holder. Gonna need a belt tension gage too.

Looks like the kit is missing the crankshaft pulley bolt though. 217 ft lb torque spec - think I'll replace that too

Maybe $450 to do the job all in and I gain a few tools. I don't even wanna know what a good shop would charge to do all this.

 

Yes, the bolt on ones are much better, the other one can ruin the pulley/damper. BUT It does not list a "fit" for the 3.4. Speaking of the crank pulley, I forgot about this one. Check that the pulley bolt is tight (now). They frequently get under torqued and loosen up resulting in a "clacking" sound, sometimes causing damage to the pulley and/or the crank itself. If it has never been touched since birth it should be fine.
If you are going to change the crank seal, have on hand a pair of m6-1.0p bolts. Long enough to work with your puller of choice, for pulling the crankshaft t-belt pulley behind the main pulley/damper and in front of the seal.

 

Man, nice catch. The 3.4 is indeed not listed. And reading further there was a post saying it would NOT fit the 3.4. I wonder if one of those universal deals would work just as well?

You want a "holder" that bolts on tight as opposed to relying on protruding little pins. I use the tool/s originally called for in the FSM. It's a "hub" that bolts on to the pulley like some later tools and a "companion flange holder" that is essentially a long handle that clips to it. The hub is drilled for several applications and the handle will also "hold" all driveline/differential flanges for service. It's an SPC tool that ran around $60, 20 years ago. It came with various pairs of bolts including a set for pulling the crankshaft t-belt pulley.
Countless folks have used the "bump the starter" method including myself but it comes with risk of damage to the starter/flywheel ring gear, however slight. Many folks have success wedging a large screwdriver between a hard place and one of the flywheel ring gear teeth both for removal and torquing at install. Flywheel is exposed after removing the lower flywheel cover.

Good stuff dirty pool - that looks like a nice kit. I found it in 2 parts for about $380, but that ain't gonna happen.

There is a holding tool with the same part number with no bolts. With the handle it would be about $180. Still more than I wanna spend for something that won't be used very often. So much for OEM tools.

Ima drop in the local auto parts stores tomorrow and see what they think

I'm still looking for a good tool to hold the crank while I tighten the crank bolt. I'm thinking 2x4 or 4x4, a hole saw, and grinding down some long bolts so the shafts fit the two holes really closely and will be solid through the diameter vs a bolt that would be weaker from the threads mashing when the torque gets up there when it's almost good'n tight.

Those prices are nuts! Way beyond inflation, more like robbery. I guess I should store them in the gun safe.
The screw driver/flywheel trick is pretty safe with reasonable care. Lots of folks fab holders up from "what have you". The best bolt/thread on and provide support to the bolts to prevent bending. Check this thread, it has some good stuff and some failures.

Ya know, I just remembered I have a few sticks of unistrut in the back of the truck. Thinking maybe I just need a couple bolts & some patience to get things lined up. Who knows - maybe I'll get lucky with hole spacing?

i used the homemade tool as dirty pool posted, worked great and less then 10.00 to make.

Keep in mind the 4cyl pulley pictured in your link is nearly flush while the V6 has a fairly deep dish. Reach down there and feel around for an idea of just how deep it is. That being the reason just plane old bolts can easily bend on the 6.
