M/T Guys, Loud Clanks when in neutral over bumps

I didn't get a chance to test drive my M/T before purchasing as I took advantage of an out of town order that fell through. But I have driven my Father n Law's 17 Pro Auto and didn't notice this loud clanking noise. Also, this is my first truck and experience with a leaf spring rear suspension.

What I'm trying to figure out is if it's normal to have loud clanks when going over bumps if the transmission is in neutral coasting. During normal drives, I hear some bangs and clanks but they're not very loud and obviously most of the time i'm in gear. However, sometimes I'll just be in a spot where i happen to just have it in neutral and hit a pot hole or something and bang clank wham from the back end. Now the sound to me seems to be more of a drivetrain sound as it's similar to noises I hear when shifting. They're just so much louder. It's a hollow metallic clang.

Now I've owned other live axle manual vehicles but none that were this loud or made noises quite like this. Is this normal taco behavior or something I should waste my time at the dealer with?

 

Normal in the sense that it should happen? Not really. Normal in the sense that manual 3rd gens do it? Yep. Mine does it too.

 

I notice this on mine, just assumed it's normal.

 

mine does it.. we have speed bumps where i work so i either drop it to 2nd and mash the gas so i continues to push to truck over and through or slow way down and crawl over it... any potholes get avoided or ran over without slowing.. my main drive to work is 2 lane roads and smooth as glass

 

Drive line slack. Needs to be there but in 3rd gens it seems more loose than normal IMO. Keep it in gear over bumps. You'll learn.

 

Jeeps have it too. Worse than Taco's imo.

I've only ever heard it once in mine and I was trying to make it happen. I never roll around in neutral...just put it in gear like it should be and this will never happen.

 

LOL - Every single MT did this small clunk going over speed bumps while the clutch is suppressed. The loudest was my Jeep, civic was the least noticeable. Perfectly normal, keep it in gear or windows rolled up.

 

my 83 and 94 did it .. as does my 17.

 

agreed all manuals have this to an extent but it just seems really really loud. but if others have it that's all i need to know.

Yeah same here..

I've found it's not as bad for the first while after you grease the U-joints. Tightens things up a bit perhaps
