Hi guys, I looked on line for video's of a bone stock SR5 4x4 V6 demonstrating what it can do off road. Most of the YouTube videos I found were for TRD's and OR's with rear locking differentials and crawl control which are very capable. I bought the truck with the tow package primarily to pull a boat and haul stuff. I don't plan on doing any extreme off roading, just beach runs and fire trail stuff. I was just curios to understand what kind of capability it does have if I venture off the pavement.....

Any SR5 owners with stock trucks out there with some experience they can share? Thanks!

The basic traction control systems have gotten more substantial over the years. The '17 base model that I'm driving for work is far more capable than most people need.

    Very capable.

Have a read here to fully describe the TRAC systems:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-traction-control-modes-explained.530695/

    Here's a video:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-non-trd-offroad.437814/page-12#post-16966208

Also, depending on how much offroading you plan on doing and how deep you will be getting in, consider pulling off your front sway bar.

Can't comment on sand- maybe the OR bells and whistles may help for that- but for snow/ice/rugged back roads the truck is a beast.

I took mine stock on difficult trails in Colorado here.. (example Schofield Pass) so can only speak to high country offroading, but I will speak to the diff and crawl mode. It has saved me more than a dozen times and avoided having to get winched or pull out of trouble. Even in four-wheel you find yourself in a situation you will be spinning 1 front and 1 rear. I start with diff lock which solves the problem majority of the time. If I'm spinning 3 tires on an obstacle or steep climb, the rock crawl works amazing, especially when the surface is slippery, or whoops created by the jeeps spinning up the hills or you bury your tires. I could see you using diff lock on or crawl if you get caught on a slippery boat ramp.

Motogeek, the SR5's do not have a locking rear differential or crawl control feature. Just 4H and 4L.

I declare this to be the spoken truth!

3rd Gen 4x4 TRAC is the stuffings for non-locked Tacos. Locks wheel(s) in mid air. Out of curiosity, does the 2nd Gen wire mod have that effect as well? I’ve only seen one video, and the rear wheel never locked.

Which wire mod are you talking about? I have an '09, and have driven a '15 and '17 company trucks extensively, all base models, and the 17 has a significantly more powerful trac system.

The yellow wire mode? Can’t recall. But I wholeheartedly agree. I previously owned an ‘08 and ‘12 OR’s. Locked and Atrac with the latter. With the ‘18, I’ve experienced a great traction control system. Particularly steep climbs. Almost comparable to Atrac. I was trying to explain just that to a member with a ‘10 OR. The TRAC in the 3rd Gen is stout.

odds are the truck is more capable off-road than you are as a driver.

Speaking of a capable driver with capable rigs, one of them locked front and rear, and the other an SR 4x4. Send @Thechief86 a message. Hombre has extensive knowledge and most importantly experience on the matter.

Air down the tires and get into low range and it will go anyplace you should go alone. Better traction aids will take you further but then you really need to have another truck with you just in case. The one thing about the base model is if you get really stuck your not so stuck that someone else can't pull you out of. Full tilt off road rigs can get so stuck or busted that you need a whole crew to get them out of their predicament.

Was that above a high school degree? SR5 don't have rear diff lock or crawl control. Dude, get lost with your garbage, you can't even read the OP post right.

Thanks for all the responses. I agree, no substitute for experience and having good aired down tires will help.
