Damn, that sucks big time. Hope no one was hurt. We travel 44 miles one way. The worst leg is the last 4 roads. The bypass is 50 mph. There were at least a dozen deer on both sides. Drives nuts they have to graze right along the edge of the shoulder! :frusty:

I still had to move the washer fluid reservoir out of the way. It took longer to put that back in place than doing the lights.

We commuted 120 miles per day, 95% highway. As we are North, many months darkness to work & back. Fortunate to have only two encounters with Taco. Even more fortunate to have never tagged one with one of our Gold Wings.

Appreciate the heads up on the reservoir. Had 28 degrees for a high today. Snow, rain & cold for the next few days.

    A prelude.......

    20180401_185501.jpg

I can't believe that this only took 10 minutes to do. New reverse LEDs.

Gonna watch the new Jumanji and then go back out and take some night pics.

Did same install of reverse & plate lights. Noticeable improvement with backup camera in dark(no glare). Simple install that increases safety. Was so favorably impressed, placed order for LED tail lights & headlights. If Toyota had offered a $300 complete LED upgrade, would that have looked attractive?

Well... guys I’m not sure how to put this or if I should say it’s bad news or good. :(

I just went out and took some photos and compared the AuxBeam F-16 to the Hikari Phillips in the fog light housing. The AuxBeam definitely out performed the Hikari. It would appear that the design of the Newer Hikari bulbs work best in projector housing and the Cree LED with the domed shaped LED perform better in the reflector housing.

    Take a look....
(truck was never moved during the swap between the lights)

Hikari Phillips Lumiled Fog and DRL’s

I’m some what disappointed about this, but when comparing the AuxBeam F-16 in the projector low beam housing the Hikari Phillips definitely won that match. However, here when it comes to the fog light housing. The AuxBeam F-16 wins.

It’s Not that the Hikari are bad in the fogs lights and they are obviously still way better than stock. For the price difference though, you may want to get the AuxBeam F-16 for fog lights or similar.

I’m still running the first version Hikari Cree in the highs beams. I may compare those to the AuxBeam F-16 in the fog housing and see if there is any difference between those or not.

I’m thinking about getting amber/yellow foglights to go with 6k hikari headlights.

Yuck! I'm so sick of winter! Yea, when we rode (stopped a couple years back) nights in the country were the scariest for sure.

I'm finally happy with the lighting on the Taco. Yea, I might make some slight adjustments but otherwise, completely satisfied. Even if you go with the GTR Gen 3s for $200 a set, if you drive in conditions like you and I, and others do, in darker areas, or for off roading then what price do you put on safety? Even without that recent sale, we're still spending half for the Hikari's! I think our lives are worth that. LOL

    I'm sure everyone agrees.

Posts like this make this forum great! Why? Honesty. Plain and simple honesty. We've been building up these bulbs for what, 60 pages and like a month or more?! Some people might even say we've been "partial" to them because we've got too much vested and have gone too far down the rabbit hole to see the inadequacies and be truthful. Well, so much for that argument huh!?

    Anyway.........I'm digressing.

Brett, this really does show how the Hikari's are not the right tool for the job. Could just be the size of the housing and reflector is just too small for that much light. You know more about this than I do and I can only speculate why. Bummer? Yea, kind of. Since the Auxbeams are cheaper and perform better I'm sure everyone can appreciate that.

As usual, great job and great review! If I didn't have the Morimotos my money would be on the Auxbeams for sure.

    Thank you very much!

Ok, here's the follow up on the reverse lights.

In a nutshell, for the $16 bucks I spent I'm completely satisfied!

    Crazy bright from behind!

    20180401_230550.jpg

I shot these because when I back up to the garage the OEM bulbs were weak and the LED garage floods (2 ea, from Costco) would cause a lot of glare in the rearview camera and it was almost impossible to see clearly until I was nearly under them.

    20180401_230836.jpg

    And again, closer.

    20180401_230900.jpg

    No more washed out image!

Then I took a couple of pics on the pitch black lane

    20180401_231136.jpg

Then this one is the same location but I moved farther towards the front of the truck so you can see the peripheral spread better.

    20180401_231147.jpg

Here's another one up near the house

    20180401_230643.jpg

    And the other side too

    20180401_230610.jpg

I mean these are crazy bright and the light is so clean!

    20180401_230536.jpg

Hard to tell it's night except for when you look past the house edges!

LOL $16 bucks! Crazy! These are so nice I'm putting them in my Lexus reverse lights too.

Once again, thanks to all you guys on this thread for all the help and direction! When we meet, and eventually we will, the first round is on me!

@RobP62 same ones I have, they do a great job lighting the way and letting others know if your backing out in the dark where your bed is the first out of a driveway or think alley way...

@Parker315 glad I have the auxbeams in my fogs! I used to drive with fogs always on for visibility and aesthetics but they are so bright I don’t want to be a pest in the road so I’ll only turn them on when needed. They fill in where the low beams don’t, even upwards...it’s like the light bar I’ve never had or will never need now hahah!

    @crashnburn80

Any updates? Rob and Brett reinvigorated my interest in your science results...in all seriousness, very eager to hear!

Need opinions on fog lights. Would you just replace the bulbs with LED’s or put in a pod from caliraised? Sorry if this has already been answered.

Note it isn’t because they are bright, it is that they no longer have the horizontal cut off of a fog beam because you changed the optics, which will reduce visibility in fog.

Not yet, I have them and they are the next project. The current LED fog pod project keeps growing. I have new pods and the Pro LED fogs now as well to compare. I got pulled into repainting the entire interior of the house, and redoing all the electrical outlets and switches so time has been a bit challenging.

Replacing the fogs with drop in LEDs will cause glare and scatter as noted above, meaning they shouldn’t be run with oncoming drivers and will not be effective in fog. CaliRaised pods are a spot beam, with no cut off, so they will not illuminate the area around your truck like a fog beam they will only illuminate an isolated area, and should not be run with oncoming drivers.

If you are looking for the cheapest pod, with a fog beam, that would be these which are much brighter than Morimotos:

Okay, took your advise and swapped out the LED's referenced in the OG post to what you recommended. I will say they don't wash out the Camera as much as the previous ones. Thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye on clarity and view as the time passes.
