No problem Gearcruncher, thanks for keeping up with this and compiling all the information for potential fixes and remedies to this problem. I hope toyota modifies the TSB for all individuals with older trucks experiencing this problem. For now, those of you with a 2012+ tacoma I suggest you get the tsb performed if you are experiencing harsh upshifts into 5th gear.

Any updates on this since 2014? Can we assume there is nothing to worry about? My '13 I've had for 1 month now is having the rough shift into 5th.

Thank you! I'll search my VIN at those links after I'm off work. I'm interested to see what, if anything, has been done at the dealer.

My 2012 has 83,000 miles on it so far. It's been doing the rough shift into 5th since I purchased it with 17,500 on it. The truck still runs like a champ and I run her hard. I don't think you should have any problems.

Mine (for some reason) feels a lot smoother since swapping out the rear leaf pack for the dakars...might just be imagination but it could have been the issue from the beginning!? I have 26k on it now...no issues and I'm sure it will be no issue in the future

I need to push my dealer to do the TSB.

I had the rough 5th shift and if I'm going 35-40 MPH it will be in 5th, locked and the second I release the gas, the truck slows down and the TC unlocks. I tap the gas and it immediately re-locks rough. I had a new transmission installed under warranty because of this, and it's still doing it.

It has to be software related. I noticed though that if I use 4, I have none of these issues (the locking/unlocking) but my transmission temperature on my Scan Gauge goes from 120°F right up to 140-145°F. I believe I'm reading the torque converter, not pan temperature as it will rapidly change. I don't like the increased heat in my converter so typically I leave it in D, even though I'm not thrilled.

I think my next one will be a 6MT, if I can convince the wife to learn how to drive manual.

This isn't related to shifting but I thought I'd post it here. When I let off the gas there is about a 1 second delay and then I feel a slight resistance while I'm decelerating. It feels like slight engine braking and isn't the typical coast that I've felt in other vehicles. It lasts for maybe 5-10 seconds and then I feel like a slight "release" (the best I can describe it) and then I feel like I'm freely coasting again. Is this indicative of a tranny problem? ('13 with 40k miles), or might there be another explanation?

Mine definitely does that. I had my transmission replaced under warranty and it still does it. If you let off the gas, especially in the 30-40 mph range, it will immediately slow, unlock the TC and the revs seem to bounce between 900-100 RPM. Tap the gas and I have an immediate TC lockup with a bit of a clunk. If I let the truck slow too much, it will drop to 4th and repeat.

The truck is absolutely commanding a shift too soon and lock way too soon. I find if I drive in "4" below 40 mph, the drivability issues I see (the bouncing revs, rapid TC lock/unlock) go away completely. However, it has a marked impact on fluid temperature. So irritating.

I have a 2015 TRD Sport with 11k on it, and what you've described is the EXACT issue I have with mine. Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this though! I came from driving a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder that would "coast" (like you've described) once you're off the gas and decelerating. My Taco seems to try and force downshift, but they are not smooth. I get rough downshift, followed by these slips/releases, where it feels like the transmission is fighting a bit to disengage and begin to coast.

I plan on taking it to the dealership this coming week to see what they say about it. I'll keep you guys posted.

Was that the reason you originally had the transmission replaced or was it something additional? When I feel the "push back" I don't get any kind of lerch or clunk when I press back on the accelerator.

Yes. I complained about the symptoms and the transmission was replaced with a factory remanufactured one (as per Toyota procedure under warranty). What I don't know is if the torque converter was replaced. The symptoms I have are identical between the two units, which leads me to believe it's a function of the programming in the transmission's brain.

Yup. Post was made about a month before the idiot crossed the center line and totaled my 2013.

Solved my transmission woes by buying the 6MT in my 2016.

Hello all! Picking up this old thread here.

I have a 2014 DCSB that I bought a few months ago and I’m experiencing both the 4th to 5th “harsh” upshift and the slowing/lag when coasting that feels similar to the engine breaking/downhill assist.

I’m just about to hit 80k miles and I don’t know that the transmission has been flushed so planning to do that soon. Wondering if it’d still be possible or worth asking about that TSB for the pinging and clunk shift? I haven’t noticed pinging but if it’s also helping with the clunk shift I’d think it’s worth a try.

Huge relief overall to see this has been experienced by other people and isn’t some major problem that I unluckily inherited. Hoping the flush and potentially the TSB will help with the clunk shift.

Thinking the coasting “issue” is just a product of Toyota programming for fuel mileage? Sometimes it seems like it does it when my foot is still lightly on the gas but I may have completely let off and not realized it so trying not to overthink that one...
