    All depends on the tire itself as true measurements vary per tire. You are correct that 255/80r17 is taller than 285/70r17 but when comparing two tires it's best to look at the manufacturers website.
    I'm not running these tires anymore. When I was, I was on old tundra wheels (close specs to OEM tacoma wheels) and I didn't need to do a CMC

    Black this black that , 315-75r16 pro-comp A/T's , 285-75-r-16 treadwright gaurd dogs full OME lift with Dakar leaf spring pack, boss airbags, 4.88 nitro gears, dakota digital speedometer calibrator, tjm air locker, arb onboard air, spider tracks 1.25" wheel spacer, sport headlights, brute force fab hybrid front bumper, 6000k 4" led fog lights, 24" double row led reverse light, storm trooper shift knob, rebadged badg-less black mesh grill, Kenwood double din stereo, 400w Rockford 12” sub . Anytime fog lights. Oh yeah almost forgot the 2016 FourWheel camper fleet model for extra traction and a place to crash if you do get stuck or broke down. 2x160watt solar, mppt charge controller by blue sky energy. 3 deep cycle batteries 20gallons water, 6gal hot water, 3.5cf 2way fridge/freezer, 6gallon propane... just getting warmed up.
    Tire charts can be deceiving as manufacturers measure differently. It’s hard to know what your gonna get sometimes. I didn’t plan on the 285’s being much different either.

    But for everyday performance that extra 1/2 inch in clearance would require a regear. Most times you're airing down anyway so that little bit of sidewall becomes negligible whereas the weight is always there.

    At some point you're losing in cost to benefit ratio.

    255/80/17. On 4runner wheels, tires st maxx, just put them on and love them. No noticeable power loss, lost maybe 1/2 mpg from 16.3 to 15.7, but its quiet. 0330181941b.jpg 0330181941a.jpg

    Fair enough on the regear, 33's appear to be the limit for most folks with stock gearing but still not seeing a distinct advantage of the 255/80 over the 255/75 size; heavier tire and a limited selection for a 1/2 inch possible in ground clearance.

    Oh well, my decision is made.

    IMO the advantage is for people who plan to wheel their truck moderately and want the benefit of an aggressive tire in a load E, with maximum diff clearance as mentioned above. I definitely wouldn’t recommend the size to someone with a plain Jane dd since, as you said, the selection is limited to aggressive heavy tires. :mudding:

    I’m 2nd gen MT also. I have found myself cruising at 75 in 6th gear towing our camper several times with stock gearing. Gearing is a non issue with this size at least for 2nd gens

    Those same aggressive tires are still available in the smaller size, I'm still trying to see the advantage of the plus one upsize, paricularly this size and in what you gain.

    Trying to find a happy medium between the benefits of the skinny tire before moving into the disadvantages of a tire size that's too limited in selection or too tall, sounds like this is the boundary before you start to lose on cost vs benefit.

    I was looking at some Michelin 255/100r16’s but they are out of my price range. Would really like to see them on my truck though. Not sure I would want them, but they are super pizza cutters.

    The XZLs? those things are wild, they're like tractor tires. I wouldn't use them on a truck that actually saw paved surfaces though - they're very soft, they leave rubber trails everywhere they go on pavement.
