@Randyp, my advice would be take your time and depending on where you're going you may want to bring some extra fuel.

Normally leave this turd in the water at my dock but I had to pull it out last weekend after it sunk tied up to the dock. Getting my truck ready to start towing it across state to my buddy’s Suwannee river property. Also have a smaller 14 foot aluminum river boat I tow around town ABFD2510-2983-4372-AE86-A8CBB92A1C14.jpg

I have said this too many times in this thread, but know that you will be towing that in S2 and S3 up hills. When you get into S3 and below, the torque converter will not lock up and your trans fluid is going to roast. I would suggest monitoring your temperature and possibly pinning the thermostat open if you see the temps going over ~230. The thermostat doesn't open until ~195F and trying to cool that once it's up there is hard on really steep hills with the small stock cooler

    Cipher,

Wow, thanks! Brakes are set at 6.5, didn't know there was a difference when the road conditions change. Will be on alert for that. I checked the hubs a few times to ensure they weren't getting hot, advice from my brother as well. Voltage sent to the brakes never went above 3 unless I applied manually.....used this a few times to ensure they were working and for max braking before lockup.
It will be in 4th gear, won't even consider OD. Tires are at max 50 psi, and lugs retorqued. All words of wisdom which I greatly appreciate, as I'm sure family as they will be behind me.

Also bought a cheap pair of walkie talkies, an inexpensive method for an emergency if they see something with the trailer or road I may not. Thanks again!

Thank you! The minor grades and holding 55 mph was just fine but like you mentioned, as they get strap I can see all this for sure. I will keep an eye on this!

Yeah, the fuel thing can be a pain when you find yourself in the middle of nowhere on a Saturday at 5:05pm and the time not gas station in town closed at 5:00pm and is closed Sundays too. I was lucky enough to find someone at the campground that had a couple gallons to spare so we could make it to the next town the following morning.

In my 2nd gen I drop it to 2nd gear on the steep grades and it'll maintain 55mph no problem with my trailer which is 5,500lbs or so loaded (I have armor on the truck so we are close to max gross as well).

I bet, being most of the drive will be on the interstate and the teuck showing what gas stations are next helps out a great deal.

re bringing more gas, remember, at 10mpg, a 5g can is ONLY 50 more miles.basically, I'd be figuring on gas stops every 150 miles....

for sure, downshift a gear even on level and downhills. on steep grades up and down, downshift at least one more gear.

side note, I just got home from camping with my 'new' 2002 f250 diesel and our Casita trailer (a mere 3500 lbs gross, and probably was around 2500 as packed).... the F250 got 16 MPG total for the 330 mile round trip, and was only a little past half full when I got home. pulling a 16' trailer with a 21' truck seemed a bit silly.

It has navigation, on the right side of the screen it will show you what has stations are coming up, restaurants and a few others I believe. I used it several months back when I picked up my trailer, and it was really convenient....ingenius really.

I've seen that list of exits when you get on the highway. Is that what you mean? That usually only goes 3 exits away for me
