which tow hook

i'm thinking about getting the stock tow hook that goes on the front end of the truck for a really good price, but is it worth it or are after market tow hooks better? which tow hook do you guys recommend?

well, i picked up a smittybuilt tow hook for 4wheelparts for 12.99. i went to ace hardware and got some grade 8 bolts and mounted it. a 3/4" shackle just barely fits, but looks like it'll do well and is MUCH cheaper than the OEM tow hook.

 

I went with the oem since I snagged off here for good price.

 

thanks for the response and the pic. i was actually able to get an oem tow hook from a guy on here for $25 shipped.

 

sheet! good price. i think dealerships want $90 or some wacked price.

 

yeah, that's about what my dealer wanted to charge me. sometimes they stick it to you if you wanna keep everything oem. right now i'm looking for the passenger air bag deactivation switch and they want $90. i thought it would be no more than $35-$40.

 

Curious if the OEM tow hook works with the OEM TRD skidplate? Anyone use both together?

I have the SR5 without the tow hook and have added a TRD skid - now considering adding the OEM tow hook as well.

 

yes you can use both together

 

I'm using one of the hooks that came off the front end of a buddies Jeep. It was free, so I couldn't pass it up. A whole hell of a lot better than the factory tie down point that was originally in its place.

The OEM hook is almost 100 dollars! Ridiculous for a small piece of steel.

 

post up a wtb thread in the buy/sell section. a few guys are welling to part with theirs for a good price.

 

Yes, I have the oem hook with the TRD skid....it barely fits but not much room the work around the hook. It looks like a tow strap would go on there but would have concerns if not being pulled pretty straight without much angle. Haven't actually test fit the strap on there yet. I'll check it out and take a coupla closer pics than I have...............

yeah, not i gotta get a tow strap but have no idea what to look for in one. any suggestions anyone?

 

Check out our Recovery straps.
Also, you guys may want to look into bolting or welding on a 2" reciever. That way you can use a reciever shackle, or any # of options.

I just did this exact same thing, towhook from harbor freight for 8.95

I turned mine the opposite direction as yours, tried it upright the first time but didn't feel there was enough clearance to get a strap on it.

Where'd you get that skid plate from? looks good, I'd like to upgrade mine, but don't wanna get reamed at the dealer.
