I decided to start a new thread on installing and getting the Smart Key door system to work on the passenger side. A previous thread was here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/passenger-door-unlock-with-smart-key.464503/, but I wanted this "writeup" to be easy to find on page one.

If you are wondering why I may want to do this as I can click unlock on the remote, I have replaced my key with the credit card style key from Lexus which does not have buttons. I do not carry any keys anymore. More on that here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lexus-credit-card-key-working-in-tacoma.445979/

    Installation

    Passenger Door Smart Key

Press “Apps” button on head unit

Go to “setup” – “vehicle” – “vehicle settings” – “select doors to unlock” – choose “all doors”

All four doors will unlock/lock when either handle is activated. Truck can be unlocked by touching either door handle even if the key is on the other side of the vehicle (within 3 feet). This can be a pro or con depending on how you feel.

We will be tapping into the driver’s side door handle and running parallel with it, I had tried to tap into the ECU separate so that the driver and passenger side remained separate, however I couldn’t get that to work.

Other members had reported trying this method and had failed, so this may or may not work for your truck however I believe the problem was the settings on the head unit were set to only unlock the driver door via the smart lock, so don’t forget that first step! Other possibilities were poor quality tap, loose wire, or simply tapped wrong location or crossed wires (top wire on drivers side door handle goes to bottom on passenger and vice versa, because handle was flipped to fit passenger side)

Unscrew and Pull the passenger door panel off.

Pull the drivers side and passenger side kick panels off.

Unbolt and pull off the knee kick panel under the steering wheel.

Remove passenger side door handle. Remove the black plastic plug on the door jamb near the handle. You will see a T30 torx bolt that should be unscrewed, though it is captive and wont come all the way out. Pull off the smaller part of the door handle from the outside, it may be tough but will come. Then you can pull the door handle off by sliding the handle into the open space and then pulling out.

    E2F74D2B-E9A9-4709-9AB3-226E3869A9DA.jpg A15AE4FA-AB2C-4203-885D-15E53FCDA562.jpg

Insert new handle and reverse steps to bolt it in.

Take the wires with pins on them (terminal repair parts) and stick them into the new connector housing you got as far as you can. I needed to use a tiny flat head screwdriver to push them in.

Connect those wires to your wires you will be running across the vehicle via butt connectors or solder. Then plug those into the handle from the inside. Make sure you can identify which wire is which. The top wire will tap into a Green wire, the bottom wire will tap into a Blue wire.
I zip tied the wire to the loop in the back of the handle to keep the wire away from the window when it is lowered.
    4955F09A-4007-48A3-BBD0-AF5F8CEA08B1.jpg

Run the wire through the door boot, this was the hardest part, I pulled the boot off each end and used a coat hanger as a fish tape and then put the boot back. LEAVE A LOT OF WIRE IN THE DOOR so the window wont break the wire, you want it to fall down under the bottom of the window track. Once in the kick panel area I ran the wire under the carpet to the drivers side kick panel. Come up from there to the Smart Key ECU, vertical black box closest to the steering wheel with three wiring harnesses going into it.

    53C9400E-C0D8-4411-9675-EEC32489CE49.jpg
On the top of the ECU find the light blue and light green wires, they should be at the top of the top harness, pin 3 Blue and Pin 4 Green. (Directly below Pin 1&2 which are empty)
    7AFB0C69-5C15-495C-99C9-857014E01106.jpg
Tap the Green wire to the top wire coming out of the door handle. Tap the Blue wire to the bottom wire coming out of the door handle.

I’m not a big fan of these taps but they work for now and I may replace with something better in the future. I did not want to cut the factory wiring either.

Test before putting everything back together.

This is Awesome! Thanks for the write up. Do you by chance have any pictures of said ECU and wires to tap. I dont want to make any mistakes and fry something.

I have no issues at all. I did put the warning in up near the top about that, but I suspect maybe they tied the top wire on each handle together and bottoms together forgetting they had to flip the handle, or maybe ran from one handle to the other almost more in series than parallel. This also won’t work if the truck’s door lock settings aren’t set to unlock all doors as I described in the first step so that may have been the real issue.

That could have been the issue. Now i just gotta find a parts source that ships to Hawaii for a decent price.

Thanks again for taking the time to figure this out!

I should have done it a long time ago. I ordered the parts 5 months ago and got too busy to finish, but this is something easy enough I should have tried this method first instead of relying on info from others, and done this 2 years ago.

    Yep.

Numbers all appear good now, you should still double check when ordering. Numbers act as links to Partznet, not an advertisement for them, but it should help confirm part numbers to colors/options.

I agree, for a 40k truck both doors should have this capability.

If you wanted to go balls to the wall could you make this work with the rear doors as well?
