What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

2 pullers right? Cause they are different sizes aren't they (BJ and OTRE)? And risk damage to the boots using them?

I use a single pitman puller for both and they won't damage your boots. A pickle fork will damage your boots but I almost never use one of those unless I've exhausted every other option.

When I got my front differential from a 1996 4Runner at the Pick-n-Pull, the whole steering system was still attached. What I did was remove the tie rods and the four bolts holding in the lower control arm to the lower ball joint and just swung the whole assembly out of the way.

 

You guys know the sticky that shows how to do this says to remove the 4 bolts holding the LBJ to the spindle? Is it wrong?

Interesting discovery today.

Havent touched those self tapping screws since I put the skid on. I had the two front skids off for maitenance and I guess driving around like this was enough to tear them out of the frame

 

Its not wrong, you can do it like that, but it isn't smart either. I wouldn't remove those bolts once they're torqued and loctited. Those are small bolts with 60ftlb on them, they stretch. I don't wanna buy new ones so I just remove the huge shank that we don't have constant record of people breaking. I've never read that sticky before haha, I don't think I've read any of the sticky threads, never really noticed they're there until just now.

 

Mine did the same. Now i just tack weld when i remove and reinstall

 

How long did you wait between base and clear? Usually you need to clear coat within an hour or so, or after a long time. Also, sometimes the solvents in the paints are not compatible. Did you read what the ingredients are in that automotive clear compared to the base?

 

can anyone point me in the direction of the turn signal relocation mod, maybe i’m just stupid but i can’t find it

 

Had a CEL light come on over the weekend. Strong winds and long uphill drive from the Grand Canyon home made the truck shift gears back and forth a lot. The transmission still seems to shift fine and revs up smoothly. Erased the code to see if it was just from driving long hours in the conditions. Hopefully all is fine.

I usually just remove the bolts but the way Zane does it might be smarter

 

When I changed out my CV axle on the trail, we took the 4 LBJ bolts out. Not sure if it was necessary but seemed like it was. Reused the bolts right then and there and did the trail, no trouble at all. I even took those bolts out again the next day to add some blue locktite to them, so they've been "reused" at least twice. No issues at all and I'm not exactly easy on my truck.

 

Bummer, it'll still go into all the gears fine like that but without the TC locking in 3rd and 4th itll get hotter and waste more fuel. I'd get that fixed sooner than later

I cleared the code. Hopefully it was due to just the conditions I was in. If it comes back on, then I will start to diagnose where the problem is from. Hopefully it wont cost too much.

 

I did not read the ingredients. I waited 24 hours to put on the clear. Funny thing is I put clear on all the other panels which used the same paint and the bubbling didn’t happen. I think I just didn’t wait long enough.
