Beware changing LSD lube!!!!!!!!!!

My 07 dc 4x4 sr5 just hit 100k so I decided to changed oil in diffs, transfer, tranny etc. Everything had been running perfect no problems.
Switched rear end to Mobil 1 LS and sure enough, now I have a soft shudder sound when turning. So I bought some LSD additive, no better.

Anyway I noticed when draining old oil from rear diff, the fluid appeared reddish, almost like ATF and looked pristine, compared with dirty, nastiness typical 90w look in front.

So I call the stealership and sure enough they have Toyota GL5 LSD oil for a bargain price of $62 per quart. They say I need 2, manual says 3 quarts, and I drained about 2.75 quarts out.

I'm considering trying some Royal Purple or Amsoil before coughing up the $180 to Toyota.

Any thoughts or past experiences with this would be appreciated. The diff felt pretty warm to touch after 40 mile round trip as is. I hope I'm not frying the mechs in the meantime.

 

IMO, synthetic gear oils are too slippery for lsd clutches. I would use a high quality 80w90 with a 4oz bottle of lsd additive. Change it every 30,000 miles like Toyota says and you shouldn't have any problems.

 

I had the same problem when I changed my diff with mobil 1 with lsd additive. switched to royale purple with autozone additive and haven't had any problems

 

Your best alternative is Redline oil. call them direct and tell them what you have and see what they say will work in it. I don't believe in royal purple personally but it is all personal opinion. If you were going to go with a synthetic oil I would use redline in all my transmissions and gear boxes but Mobile one in the engine. Like I said personal opinon but I have found that Redline usually has a list of OEM specifications and what oil they make that is comparable. Don't laugh - the jetta i used to own (i sold it) said it needed dealer specific trans fluid but I called redline and they had one that was a replacement and no one else did.

REALLY?? I have Royal Purple now and it studd-dd-eres. Royal Purple already has the lsd additive that's what it says on the bottle
So you have NO studder, shudder feeling in the lsd now or after the "extra" additive!!??

 

Even if you use synthetic I believe you still need the friction modifier. Your probably better off using Dino oil with the LSD additive and change it at recommended intervals.

 

You will need to add some additive. The included amount is very small in comparison to what most manufactures require.

 

I had royal purple in mine and it was fine for a bit then it started to bind and make noise. I switched out to Castrol dino 80w90 and some FORD LSD additive and everything works great. I just don't think our truck likes the synthetic in general. I know some GM cars/trucks actually say don't use synthetic. Wonder if toyota uses the same company as GM for their LSD.

 

I plan on using Amsoil LSD formula when the time comes.

 

I am sure it's all Dana. On Jeep LSD, the synthetic is fine, but just add more additive.

 

You can use synthetic in the GM auto locking diffs (in fact the trucks come with it from the factory) , but if you have limited slip like in the Trailblazer SS or the Corvette, GM uses Dexron LS fluid. It's basically dino oil with the proper amount of additive mixed in. At about $23.00 a quart, it's kind of pricey, but it works great.

Last week I got done reading a ton of posts on this site in regards to changing out the rear differential fluid. The absolute best way to go, from a number of people's recommendations, is to use straight up dino (dinosaur) or NON-synthethic in this case. Buy 3 quarts of dino oil, plus some Limited Slip Differential additive, and you'll be good to go. I know everyone wants the very best for their ride, but in this particular case Synthethic oil is not the way to go. It's fine to use it in the transfer case, the front differential, your engine, etc., but if you have an LSD on your truck, you'll most likely end up with chattering problems. I've heard of chattering issues with Mobil one, and shearing issues with Royal Purple. The only ones I haven't heard anything bad about on this site are Redline and AMS oil. There's a pretty big write up on this site about all this. Do a search on here and you should come across it. Toyota Nation also has a real nice write up on doing all three fluid changes....Front, transfer, and rear diff. In this rare instance, the write up on the Nation is better than what we currently have going on Tacoma World.

I found the LSD additive at Autozone if you have one of those near you.

Here's the link to the sticky on this site. It does a real nice job. You can read through it...be sure to read it all, and make up your own mind on what type/brand of oil you want to use. Within the posts I personally put a link to the write up that was done on Toyota Nation, which will walk you through doing all three fluid changes...front, transfer case, and rear differential. ok, dropped mobil 1 and added some dino 80w-90 and a 4oz. tube of lsd additive. mucho bettero, the shudder is gone but still seems to be a mild hum with turning. this is after doing several tight and slow figure 8s. any ideas guys? I'll probably ride this set-up a few days and see how it does. what do yall think about adding more additive? anyway its better

 

FWIW, When I changed my LSD diff. oil on my 07 prerunner about 3 months ago, I went and bought the LSD diff oil at Frank Toyota here in SD. I figured that if that's what they use, I shouldn't have any problems... and I haven't.
I bought 3 quarts that already come with the LSD additive included & it was definitely under $60 for everything. Are you sure Toyota is charging you $60 PER quart?
I have the invoice at home but it for sure wasn't more than $60 for the three quarts.

 

Use the FORD stuff...Motorcraft oil and Motorcraft friction modifier

You will have no issues

I'm pretty sure the parts guy said $62 per quart, but I'll call to double check. I searched online and found zilch.

No Ford product will ever go near my Toyotas. (automobile racism????????)
