Bluetooth steering wheel controls.

FYI guys, the Kenwood head units don't suppor the phone buttons doing anything with phone functions, even with the swi-pac adapters. Doesn't matter too much, I just reach over and tap the touch screen.

 

I just used the same #'s at toyotaworld.com and they did work.

I've been researching this topic and for guys that have done the bluetooth controls with the PAC-PS, I hope you can answer this question. Do you follow the same instructions that were included in the PAC, like the wiring part? It says to connect the PAC to posts 7 and 8 on the steering wheel adapter, but those two posts are only for the stereo buttons, not the bluetooth ones. Or is that one part # the adapter?

 

Chadmb2003, you just wire the swi-ps as its instructions tell you. Its like the phone control buttons came stock with your truck.

nolanspawn, the part numbers are still valid, as Tom has said. Make sure you navigate to the page where you order OEM parts from.

 

So the phone control buttons will work even though the prongs on the plug are only for the stereo ones?

Also, what does the new controls connect to on the stock wiring?

 

Don't think of the wires at the back of the headunit as for the stereo controls only; they input signals from all of the buttons on the steering wheel.

The one part number above is for a ribbon cable; you connect the new phone controls to the existing stereo controls on the steering wheel with this cable. This ribbon cable passes the signals from the phone controls to the stereo controls, and then they are passed down to the headunit through the existing wires.

BTW, how easy of an install is the PAC adapter if you have very small wiring experience and no soldering experience? Should I just take it to the local store and have them install the adapter?

 

If you can install an aftermarket headunit, you should have no problems with the swi-ps. You can use butt connectors instead of soldering - just following the instructions. It really is easy to do.

My recommendation is to not install the swi-ps behind the headunit. This way you can reprogram it anytime you want without having to take the headunit out. Put it under the dash, or under the cupholders or something.

 

Here is the link on how to wire the SWI so it is accessible next to the glove compartment. It was really one of the easier parts to install in my whole project.

I just received my BT controls today. Will be installing it this weekend. Finally, the last part of my HU install. I haven't programmed the SWI yet because I was waiting for the BT parts.

I have a question about the list of programming options. Can all of these options be programmed with the same two buttons below the volume controls?

Track Up/ Seek Up
Track Down/ Seek Down
and
Preset Up/ Disc Up
Preset Down/ Disc Down

Also, can the Source and Band options both be programmed to the Mode button? Would these conflict or is there only one option available for each control button?

Just in case anyone else wants to order the BT parts. I got them from ToyotaWorld and they got them to me pretty quick, but later I found this site: Toyotapartsoutlet.com. Price is about the same but right now they're not charging shipping which was a little over $10 from ToyotaWorld.

Before the thread gets too derailed, lets take up your question in the thread you linked. This thread is focused on the phone controls, and how its physical interface is setup.

 

The backlighting on the bluetooth controls looks about the same color as the 4runner's interior lights (i think...it's been awhile since I've been in one). Perhaps there's two part numbers for the same unit?

 

After some pain, returns, and too many trips to too many stores, I highly recommend sticking with Pioneer if you're looking to add Bluetooth functionality to your aftermarket HU/steering wheel. I usually research the heck out of everything, but jumped on a reduced price JVC with Bluetooth...only to find out that the phone functions weren't supported with SWI-JACK. After calls and e-mails to Crutchfield and PAC, and more research online, I came to the conclusion that the JACK (JVC, Alpine, Clarion, and Kenwood) is limited with SWI's phone capabilities. By far the best available functionality is with Pioneer using a SWI-PS. Kenwood is a close second if you're so inclined, but some of the programming options look a little weird (seek up, but no seek down?).

In the end, I'm very happy with my install. Starting with a stock 09, non-JBL, radio controls on-the-wheel only, I added:

-Bluetooth steering wheel controls (the recommended cable and button pad from an earlier post)
-Pioneer AVH-P3200BT Head Unit ($450)
-SWI-PS to allow the two to talk properly (560 ohm resistor)

The only item I can't get to work with my phone is Voice Dial, but I suspect it may be my phone (a Motorola Q), as all of the other steering wheel buttons work properly (including call pick-up and hang-up). Pioneer doesn't have a solid list of compatable phones on their website yet.

Advice on programming the SWI: don't try too hard. It REALLY is as simple as the instructions state. Dont try to get fancy and add button pushes. The only time you should be touching the programming button on the side of the device during actual button programming is to skip a function. My kid and I did it on the FIRST TRY (made a second attempt after the Voice Dial didn't work, but it didn't cure the lack of functionality...hence my assumption that my phone may be the issue).

I'm very happy with the head unit, and am only going to make one small change to the install method. It is required that you hook up a wire to the parking brake to lock out the possibility of playing DVDs, using some of the "settings" features, etc., while driving. It's installed as instructed right now as I didn't feel like working on it any longer today. After some research, it appears there is a work-around involving putting in a switched line to ground...not sure if I'll do it or not.

Thanks to all of you hard chargers that posted the plethora of instructions and had the intestinal fortitude and time to tinker around. I'd like to say I installed it all myself, but my 10-year-old helped...

 

Are you sure that wasn't a 560 ohm resistor? That's what I used and that's what the directions called for. Also I can attest that the directions make it out to be harder than it actually is. Only press when you want to skip!

Well that part comes up as the cruise control switch for a 06-09 4Runner. I dont think that this is the right part number. For a Tacoma you must spend $150 for the complete switch kit which has left, right , and the ribbon.

 

I can assure you that 8424435030B0 will get you the steering wheel phone controls. Proof is in the pictures. You will need the 8420458010 ribbon cable also.

You do not have to order the tacoma switch kit. However, I don't know if ordering the switch kit will get your the correct color bulb or not.

I will say that I don't even notice the color difference anymore.

 

I agree with PSUnick. For the $$ difference, I'm not worried about the color difference. The ones he lists are slightly more yellow in hue that the existing orange buttons, but not so much that it looks out of place.

 

I have spent a lot of time searching and cannot determine . . . will the mod in this thread work on a 2010 DC TRD SR5 non JBL HU (SW does have LH controls)? I cannot even find a 2010 SW diagram. Dealer had my exact truck I wanted but missing the BT RH controls . . . the one thing missing. Dealer seemed pretty clueless on aftermarket install. And our state now has harsh Hands free law, and everyone seems to know just when I get in my car to call me If I can confirm I would love to take advantage of the Pioneer deals and get a new HU, the ribbon cables, controls and SWI and get this in . . .

 

Im wondering if this will interface with my Eclipse Avn-726E H/U???

 

I have the same truck and it works fine. I ordered the BT controls and cable as posted and with the SWI control, it works perfectly.
