I changed to Royal Purple on my 09 tacoma, v6 I put in about 5.5 to 6 quarts and its not really showing up on the dipstick too good it is way to thin and runs up the whole stick, with my normal oil it was clear as day to read. Is this normal with Synthetic oils? is there a trick to making it easier? thanks I know there are posts on dipstick problems but none really with synthetic dipstick problems

The dipsticks on the 2nd gens absolutely SUCK and its normal.

Some folks have sanded or roughed up the ends to help. I roughed mine up pretty good and it didn't help at all. For the most part - I put the recommended amount in, check the dipstick and guess where the mark is - and seeing the oil is there......and that's about it.

I wish there was an aftermarket dipstick out there - I somewhat searched a couple years back without any results. I didn't spend that much time searching though....

Ha ha you have a little too much oil in there.
5.2 quarts puts you at the top line and over if you did not drained all correctly so 5.5 - 6 is way above the full mark :)

I use Royal Purple also but to answer your concern is simple I think that's if you have not done this. Fill with 5 quarts then turn on engine so that some oil go's into the oil filter, turn off engine go inside have a cookie :cookiemonster:, (let the oil drain back down)then come out add some oil little by little till you can get an accurate reading on the dip stick Jimmy!! (sorry had to) :D

Oh and as the dipstick goes. I think problem is related to the fact that dipstick makes S while goign to oil. So what I do is I remove dipstick for good 5-10 minutes for oil to come down from that pipe and then put dipstick i and out to get level. Hope that helps

I have no problems with reading my dipstick, maybe it's because I use Toyota oil. [IMG]

The best way to do it is to check it when the truck has been parked for a few hours like before you go to work and then first time you pull the dip stick is the amount of oil you have. rather than pulling the dip stick check it then put it in and checking again.

I've tried all that.....and my dipstick still sucks. I can get a half-assed reading from it but it always seems to read low. I put 5.5quarts in and that's all I need to know. The dipstick reading is just a backup (so to speak). As long as its on the stick somewhere within those lines...I'm happy.
