Toyota Canada specifies 16,000 km oil changes. Dealers are allowed to recommend pretty much anything they want. I will do 16,000 km (10,000 miles) on mine as I don't see the point of doing it any more often if that's how Toyota designed it.

Did you buy your truck brand new or used? I can go take a pic of the window sticker from my old 2nd Gens too and they both say 5/60 also

Exactly what i was saying, used warranties are certified by the Dealer which is why yours has 100k, new is 5/60.

I would agree to what Toyota specifies for the first initial OCI miles change, if there were to be a problem with not changing the first initial OCI to a shorter change the Toyota engineers who designed the vehicle would have pointed that out, I really don't think Toyota wants to have to replace engines under the powertrain warranty because they want to save money on extended first OCI changes if it weren't necessary.

yes mine is used and I have followed the manufactorers recommended OCI which is every 5k miles and the truck purrs like a kitten approaching 100k mark, and I never seen a shred of metal in the filter, drainplug or pan since ive owned it, doing the Toyota recommended maintainence intervals.

    None as of yet
In most situations this is true, but my truck comes with a Lifetime Warranty.

Good deal, I never cut open the filters like you do but have sent samples to Blackstone and have been good to go too.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I'll wait to change it at 5k for the 1st one and then debate to do it every 5k or 10k thereafter.

Also this is my first new vehicle, all my other trucks I changed the oil myself but I'm guessing the safe route is to wait until the warranty runs out before changing the oil myself or for the sake of resale value should I just turn in my man card and have the dealer change it forever? While I'm a stickler for maintenance I gave two shits about keeping receipts in past vehicles but I want to be one of those guys who had a folder full of crap if I ever need to sell this truck

Lol man card... you realize that less than 4% of people still change their own oil. I drive 30K a year, which is an oil change every four months! Yeah, the dealer does mine.

Right, I don't send it in every change but I really like seeing the Blackstone Analysis Reports every so often to see the current health of my vehicles. The report on my Mustang came back awesome, they said it was in the top 1% of all the many 5.0s they have on file.

I never sent to Blackstone but ive researched on BITOG my trucks engine UOAs and have seen a few UOAs on the new 3.5l v6 and basically those were better than satisfactory based on the recommended Toyota OCIs and weights. if there were metal shavings in the initial oil change due to the engine breaking in there would be no harm done to it doing the regular OCIs heres proof from Blackstone Labs https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...e-2017-trd-or-4x4.452219/page-3#post-14130107

You are arguing against yourself brother, i have zero disagreements on following Factory OCIs. The Manual in the Glovebox says 5k for severe use and 10k for normal use, nothing to disagree with.

Won't metal shavings be trapped in the oil filter anyways.
