Ive seen lots of reviews from people in the US, and a few saying they had corrosion issues in their winters. Has anyone run one of these things long term in a real winter?

Almost every dealer installs them, they like anything can fail, if you're really worried just spray some oil on the mechanism and lubricate the tail gate latches.

Most of the ones I've seen broken are simply due to high resistance in the moving parts. It's plastic, you can't expect too much.

I’ve had mine through 2 winters and no issues. You just have to have to be gentle with it and you’ll be fine. 2 years and still going.

I’ve had mine for 4 years now. No problems. I wired it into the passenger side door lock so it only opens when all doors are unlocked. Saves it locking and unlocking when you don’t want it to. Having said that, I haven’t taken the inner panel off the tailgate since install.

I'm guessing you got the programmable one then?

Hmmmm, I don’t think so. I just ran the wires in a loom and followed the harness down the frame rail on the pass side. Then I found a grommet in the floor under the pass seat, to get into the cab, and spliced and soldered into the wire for the door lock/ unlock. I think that I found the wire behind the kickplate. So whenever the passenger door is locked/ unlocked, so is the tailgate. It’s been a few years since install, let me see if I can find the one I bought.

this one looks familiar, but again it was at least 4 years ago that I did the install, it might even be over 5. I've done so many mods to the truck, I honestly can't remember. I'm pretty sure that it was only around $80 when I bought it as well, but the Canadian dollar was a little stronger then.

Mine is doing well, but I'm in Alberta so I can't speak to salty environments unless you count driving the QE2

I've had mine for about 4 years. I lube the lock a couple times a year.

I do worry though because there is a lot of friction in the mechanism when I turn the key. I've heard of these things breaking and if you have a cap or tonneau cover, you basically have to damage those / rip them off in order to open your tailgate.

I was thinking of doing this ~$10 power tailgate actuator mod. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/10-diy-power-lock-tailgate.424052/

8 years and going fine. Around the 3 year mark, the latch mechanism was sticking open, so I sprayed it with some white lithium grease. Been working fine since. I lube the lock cylinder with teflon spray every year, the same time I do the locking fuel cap.

And yes I see a lot of road salt. Second pic shows my front bumper bolts (grade 8 Fastenal zinc plated) after 5 years:

When you say real winter, you mean rust belt winter? I've had mine for 3 years but VA winters are pretty light on the salt. I had some issues when i first got it with the mechanism not wanting to move when i turned the key, but i sprayed some WD40 in there and put done grease on the pivots and haven't had problems since. I have the manual locking one though
