Boom. That's the answer right there. All us 4.0L are gonna do way less mpgs then y'all running the 3.5L

A second gen, for me? After the shitshow that my third gen has been for me it's seeming more and more likely.

    Working on it now....UNDER CONSTRUCTION
I have the 4 liter truck and regularly go above 2000 rpm's and 60 mph. My truck gets fairly heavy use so I don't have time to delay getting from point a to b. I keep my vehicles in top shape so maybe that is the difference. I also run synthetics. Seems normal to get 22 with the factory setup and 17.5 with MT tires. My 2008 Tundra with the 5.7 gets 16 mpg and that is after putting on the Nitto Ridge Grapplers.

I have found that most people don't know how to calculate MPG properly. Even if you explain it 3 times they don't get it. The proper way to calculate MPG:

    1. Reset Trip A after filling up until the pump shuts off automatically.
    2. Run the vehicle until fill up is required. (close to EMPTY)
    3. Fill up the vehicle until pump shuts off automatically.
    4. Make note of gallons filled up by looking at the numbers on the pump.
    5. Divide the miles traveled Trip A by the gallons displayed on the pump.
    6. Take the number displayed and adjust for tire sizes as the factory tires have a different number such as 31 1/2 as opposed to 33 inches, about 5% difference. Example: 306 miles on Trip A divided by 18.42 gallons of fuel equals 16.61 mpg then multiply the number by the difference in wheel size in my case .05 percent, 16.61x1.05=17.44, you are left with 17.44 MPG.

I have to log every fill up and have since the vehicle had 5 miles on it. I make a living with numbers. About 10 percent of the people will read what I posted and attempt to do it. Out of the 10 percent half will fail to do it correctly.

That is how I calculate my mpgs, and my vehicle is kept in top shape. I run full sny Mobil 1 5w 30, which I change every 3-4K miles. I grew up working on cars, and doing all the regular maintenance so keeping a Toyota in good shape isn’t hard. I just filled up my truck, and reset trip A, per the usual. I run premium gas, or 91 octane here in CA. On the drive home I kept it between 2k-2.5k rpm and ran the AC for about 10min out of the 20min drive. I thought about omitting the AC use, but opted instead for limited use. My top speed was 64mph at 2300rpm.

50 miles in, and driving like this is a total change for me. I haven't gone above 3k rpm or 65mph....

Turns out I’m not getting nearly as bad mileage as I thought. I never accounted for the increased tire size because I thought it was only a couple percent. Turns out I’m 9% larger when calculated from stock 30.5” to my now 33.5”....

When properly calculated I got 1.5 mpg back, putting me at 14.7 on this last tank of mostly highway.

And that’s in this heavy bitch, 1,100 lbs over stock and 34s
