100% THIS. The electronic throttle may never feel quite as good as a true physical connection but there's no reason for it to be dulled down anywhere near as bad as it is. Most cars have drive by wire throttles these days but most still manage to have reasonable throttle response, there is definitely something specifically wrong with the tune this truck that's holding it back. It's definitely gotten better with the tune but for me it's still the one thing that needs a lot more improvement. And I'm still happy to help with logging/testing when that time comes :D

Sure it may never be as rev happy as more performance oriented cars/engines but to say "it's a truck not a racecar so it will just be like this" is absolutely ridiculous. Other cars with this same engine don't have the same problem, they rev much more freely (see the videos a few pages back with examples of the Highlander and Camry revving). Clearly the engine is capable so there's no reason for the Tacoma to be artificially dulled down and feel like crap just because "it's a truck"

What are the actual gains from this tune on 87? To my understanding there are no horsepower gains, but is this just at top end? I know this has already been discussed, I just cannot find a clear answer. Mind that I am in CA and do not want to pay for the 91 $ on every fill up as this is my commuter truck as well.

Mat has said no HP gains on 87.

Some members may surmise otherwise.. but the dyno results posted by Mat were all done on 91 Octane tune files with at least 91 fuel in his dev truck tank.

Gains with the 87 files are in the driveability and perhaps mpg categories.

So others have experienced mpgs and better low end throttle response on 87 tune? Thanks for the replies, I know this has been covered somewhere on this forum.

    Morning

Can't wait to see what 1.05 brings.

Yep, the addiction is still strong dammit!

Meanwhile, time to dust off the laptop and capture a few 2nd/3rd gear pulls with techstream. I get the intermittent ignition ping around 3K rpm on 1.04A 91 file. It's brief, and doesn't happen all the time.

Remember, stepchild 3rd gen here :anonymous:

    Is that all he needs?
Makes sense.just enough to cover the suspect ping range.
Have you been able to repeat it?

Guys, i like how the truck drives now, and it aint brokein yet..

Will getting this tune blow my mind like it has some/most of you?

Btw, i currently have tuned vw that screams bloody murder. I like it. But really the taco hasnt left me feeling like im missing anything.. yet. I mean does the throttle response rip like a chainsaw? im no better driver than anyone else on here. Talk me into it! I trailer a small boat, drive up north once or twice a year.

I have basically the same vehicle you do. I have only run 87 tune. I have had it for 3,100 of the 4,600 miles on the truck. I was happy with the truck when I bought it. But very happy after the tune. It will make more sense after the tune, but it does smooth out the feel when accelerating, and has a more direct throttle response. Honestly, I didn't realize the shortcomings of the stock vehicle until after the tune. I put 400 to 600 Miles per week on the vehicle, and the 87 tune it is about the drivability. Also, I am also experiencing an MPG gain. This fluctuates with daily stop and go traffic and turnpike speeds, but overall better than 1.0 MPG, easily. Basically, like having an extra gallon of gas in the tank.

I can't attest to the current 1.04a that is available as I haven't emailed Matt for it yet as I have been super busy (hoping to do that soon though!), but can speak about 1.03b/c versions. In general, the the tune helps make more of a smoother power delivery as our stock MT tacoma feel like they are a Honda Vtec engine with power surges coming on noticeably at 3500k rpm. It does seem to help the throttle response as well but it's definitely not ripping like a chainsaw. Actually even tuned, the throttle response was much less that of any other Toyota I have driven, that's why people are asking for the 1.05 power map. Even the gas peddle on wife's old corolla and rav4 feel like that of a a sports car compared to our Tacos. Is it better then stock but it still leaves a lot to be desired in my own personal opinion. The improved power delivery is very noticeable in 5th/6th gear too. Our trucks sometimes feel like we got two OD gears and realistically, we have 4spd trucks rather then 6spd trucks. Sure 5th and 6th help with improved mpg, but lack any real torque. The tune helps make them much more freeway friendly. The .03b tune however bucks sometimes at low speed acceleration and clunks when shifting, which makes you look bad to passengers lol. The .03c tune is smoother but less responsive. One thing I can say was awesome about the tune was the MPG improvements, I was getting almost 3mpg better tuned! And others I know with are experiencing the same.
Until the acceleration pinging/knocking gets resolved for good, I'm running the stock tune. And it's weird because I have come to like the stock tune as it reminds me of a Civic Si I use to drive back in the day. Nostalgia only goes so far though and I'm excited for when this tune "rips like a chainsaw". Matt is a smart guy and I'm sure he will continue to provide us with better and better versions, and fingers crossed more bolt on goodies!

I plan to use the fancy new Zendesk or whatever it's called to open a ticket and attach a log file with Mat's previous PID list. I can repeat the ping, yes.

1.04A is a very good version of the tune overall. Throttle response is greatly improved over stock. The 91 octane version gives you added top end, but more importantly a nice torque bump in the mid range. It's still not a screamer, nor is it a low end stump puller. And yes, the throttle still needs some more work IMO.
Highway driving is where I notice the extra torque the most. At 70 in 6th, you're right in the sweet spot at 2500. It's quite effortless, as my truck will accelerate up all but the steepest of hills. You don't have to mash it either.

My guess was Toyota made the throttle response crappy to trick the EPA testers into thinking the truck is underpowered, thus more fuel efficient.
