Towing a boat

I am considering the purchase of a Tacoma Access cab, 4 x 4 automatic with an I4 engine. I will be towing a boat with total weight of about 1300 #. Does anybody have any experience with a similar situation? How did this engine work while towing. I know that the towing capacity is 3500#, but I do not want to be slowing down while going up a hill. I presently am driving a V6 Ranger which does a great job of towing, but I am tired of eating the gas bills.

 

whats up man. as for towing a boat that size there should be no problem ive seen boats here in cali 21-26 footers towed by tacomas with ease 2006 dbl v-6 model so you shoulb be fine.

 

Hopefully this weekend I will be towing a 1978 Catalina 23' sailboat up to Canyon Lake (boat + trailer = 3,800lbs).

I have an AccessCab PreRunner 2.7L I4. Only performance modifications are on the air intake. I removed the secondary air filter and replace the stock filter with an AFE drop-in high flow filter.

But I did all that after I did this...

As far as towing, the taco can pull it easily but for gas wise, its probably the same as your ranger. I drive about 20 miles a day, 5 days a week and i fill up once a week.

 

Yeah, but he is talking about getting a 2.7L. It doesn't have great gas mileage when towing (I got ~16 towing 4,000+lbs), but the rest of the time it is great.

FORE-WARNING - the 2.7L took me almost 8000 miles before I started seeing mid-20's in fuel economy. This isn't true for everyone, but it is pretty consistent. The 2.7L needs time to break in.

With the intake mods that I have, I get 25 MPG average 50/50-highway/city.
