Oil change today. I've always used Mobil1 filters on this truck cause I thought they were good & were the only size that fits on my truck with the relocator.

Well I never bothered to check until today. Turns out I do have room for the longer OEM D3 filter. No more overpaying for filters now, going to use the D3 from now on.

BTW, I've always wondered, how much oil does the 5VZ normally take on an oil change?

I didn’t know these existed, are they pretty easy to install? (The relocator kit not the oil filter:D)

There is more to an oil filter than its capacity. I'm sure the extended performance filters are higher quality and use synthetic medium where the OEM filters do not.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Part of me is looking forward to finally knocking all of this stuff out. The other is dreading working in this Houston heat.

I didn't actually install mine but yes they are pretty easy to install. I bought my truck with 28K mi on it in 04, PO installed it. I didn't like the configuration he used so I redid it with a new oil filter mount & bigger hoses.

Basically you just install an adapter where the oil filter normally goes that has 2 barb fittings, mount the relocator wherever you want then connect 2 hoses.

So I'm spoiled & have no idea what it feels like to do an oil change with the stock filter location. Filter changes are easy & no mess. Also increased my oil capacity a bit, I use 6.5qt for oil change, which is the reason I asked how much oil does it normally take to do an oil change.

Yeah I know & is why I'm not going to use the Mobil1 filters anymore. They're basically the same as K&N oil filters & for what they are, they are overpriced IMO. I don't need a high performance expensive oil filter, whatever is decent & priced well is good enough for me.

The Mobil1/K&N oil filters are not anything special IMO, extended performance my ass, just paying for the name. I've never had an issue with them though. I still have 1 left so I'll use it on the next change, then back to the D3.

That slight different in size is not noticeable, still takes 6.5qt for oil change as before with the shorter filter. I'm not one of those guys who have to use everything OEM & I've never used an OEM filter on this truck before but seeing one cut open like many others, for what they are, they are well worth the price. Less than half the price of the Mobil1 filter. Since I have a choice to use a bit bigger filter, might as well.

It’s a very well done design. The washer is interesting, it’s half rubber half stainless steel.
