Toughest body paint?

Once again, i turn to you guys for advice. I'm looking at painting my truck. I was contemplating vinyl wrapping the whole thing, but after applying sample strips to my truck, i can see that the color is not EXACTLY what I'm after. Plus, it appears that painting it myself would save me several hundred dollars. And could potentially be more durable.

My initial paint train of thought was: rhino line (or similar) the whole truck, and paint the rhino liner to whatever color I chose. It would simplify the actual painting process, as this is my first time, and hide any obvious rookie mistakes in the texture. After some investigation however, it seems that the Herculiner can not be painted, and on the website, it says to expect spidering, and cracks, regardless of the prep work or proper application. I also found that when its painted, it chips and flakes off real easy. Like when someone rubs it with their shoe, it flakes off easy.

Secondly, extra addition of weight has been brought up to me from a few different sources. I only have the 2.7.

Here's where I need the advice.

Anyone have any experience with this?
Is there a tough paint that I can purchase that will withstand reasonable trail driving? What do you guys think?

It's very expensive. For marine use but is def. tough.

 

I monstalined my last truck. It was good at hiding any scratches or little nicks. It was a very easy application process, and had a smoother texture (like an orange peel). Easy to wash. And like you stated, it was tougher than paint. I think it firmed up the body panels a bit too.
The thing I disliked about it was if the paint cracked you are screwed. Water would build up and bubble under the liner. I had 2 cracks appear in the middle of my tailgate for no reason. Yes it had a well done prep job. It was one of the reasons I sold the truck.
When it comes time to paint my current truck, I will stick with the traditional paint.

What about as far as the prep work for spraying? More difficult? But it would still be worth it? Also, I'm gonna be filling some dents with bondo. What should i prime that with for the monstaliner to adhere?

 

Same work, I guess more tape and taking doors off if you want to do a good job.

What's your goal? Specific color? There's a member who posted recently about spraying their first gen with that quicksand color from the new trucks, might be able to offer some insight. @rkinnc

Looking to paint the whole truck after some minor body work. That color is pretty much identical to what I'm looking to do, but in a matte finish. He use the monstaliner?

 

I'm looking at doing a military grade paint sold by sherwin William's. It runs about 275 a qt but well worth it. Done a couple of vehicles with it. But need a large needle gun to spray it. And not many color options. They make it for the military vehicles.

 

That military desert flat humvee color is exactly what I'm looking for. But 275 a quart??? That's steep. Real steep.

 

Colors fine, it is chipping a bit on the rocker panels but I think I didn’t get those as good.
And I drive a metric fck ton of miles on the dirt with no mud flaps.


Be sure to get rid of any surface rust, and do like 3 coats, I have tiny pin holes that have started it rust

 

I always thought bedlinered bodies looked pretty ghetto in pictures, and then I saw one in real life. Ghetto would be an improvement.

 

Well, that's mean. One of the features they push about the monstaliner is that it doesn't have as bad of a textured appearance. pretty much the scheme I'm looking for....

 

And all things considered, I'm looking for the most durable paint job. A type of liner seems to fit the bill.
