Lifespan of stock struts?

Just wondering how many miles/years 2nd gen owners have been getting out of their stock strut set-up before replacing?

The longevity of struts has always been a mystery to me. I've had cars where the factory struts only last ~60k before leaking or failing the bounce test. Now, on another car, the stock (Bilstein HD!) front struts lasted 220k miles.

I'm at 5 years/65k miles into Tacoma ownership.

My rear stock Bilstein's lasted about 70k. I replaced them about 2 months ago. I think the fronts are about done also. I'm starting to hear the same noise as I was in the rear. I'm almost at 75k now.

 

What noise signaled the death of your struts?

 

When I went over any type of bump it sounded like I had something in the bed that was going airborne and then dropping hard or possibly bottoming out which wasn't the case. I could make the noise myself by pushing up and down on the rear bumper also. When I took them off there was absolutely no compression in one of them.

I think I had posted something about it on here when I was trying to figure out what the noise was. I'll have to look.

Depends on your driving (doing a lot of off-roading?). I spent most of my 5 1/2 years (88K miles) on the highway. I knew they were shot from the extra bouncing on large bumps/dips on the freeway. Would hit a dip, bounce up, bounce down, and then back to normal. It's been like this for at least a couple of years. With the 5100's now, hit the dip and bounce up to normal. That's probably the easiest way to tell. I also remember someone saying they tested out stock shocks on other vehicles and found that they lost 50 percent of their ability within the first year or two. So I will say, you probably need them by now. And I have no idea if the SR5 shocks wear out faster than the TRD shocks.

 

I just replaced all 4 of my SR5 shocks at 106k miles. No reason, but I thought it was about time for some new ones, and Sonny had a good deal on 5100's

My front TRD Billys leaked out at around 30K miles. Rear waited until 70K or so until they died.
