COMPLETED 5th Gen 4Runner BBK upgrade for 2nd Gen Tacomas

Also if you get stop tech rotors and some reman calipers should be $250 or so. Some links posted a few pages back. Centric date $62 each I believe and rotors are around $150 I recall.

 

FYI - 17" aluminum rims from a '17 won't clear these calipers. Don't know which model they came off of, but they have 5 silver double spokes with dark grey recesses. Fortunately had a set of 18" available.

 

Curious if you need a spacer to run these. Most folks running 17" are running aftermarket. Or whats different from 4runner to tacoma. thanks for the heads up.

 

Spacers might work - there were light scratch marks on the inside of the Tacoma rim about an inch in when I had it almost bolted tight. 4runner wheels only have 15mm offset vs 30 for the Tacoma. Borrowed an FJ 17 x 7.5 with 15mm offset and it clears fine as well. It might be possible to grind a little on the calipers and make the Tacoma rim fit, but since i had an alternative I passed on that.

So with the centric remans, I see core charges applied. Are they gonna verify that the returned calipers are in fact the same part?

 

Not 100% sure, in my scenario I didn’t have to deal with core charges.

It's similar. The link that you posted uses the previous generation 4Runner/Lexus parts. This is the new generation 4Runner/Lexus parts.

The rotor diameter is the same, but the newer generation rotor is thicker. It should be able to take more heat and be less susceptible to warpage. The new generation caliper also has larger pistons, so it should provide increased clamping force.

 

Also the GX is not a perfect fit. I think the spindle to caliper is a different size bolt. The smaller setup is tundra setup I believe. This setup uses 5th gen 4Runner parts. These have 338mm rotor so slightly smaller compared to 345mm GX setup. I saw 10-12% shorter distance but also added sliders, leaf in between tests. It will depend on your armor. Still feels great and I’ve added a ton of steel. It’s not perfect. I also didn’t add aggressive pads. Next swap will be more aggressive.

So I just ordered parts. Can I use the stock dust shield. What part hits. Is it the bent over part on the top. It I snip the top will it fit

 

It wont fit without trimming like you mentioned. Best bet is to get the new rotor and slap it on and cut where it rubs.

 

Just completed this upgrade. Thanks for the tips. Time consuming but otherwise not too bad!
I did make the mistake of spraying some brake clean on the inside of the hub and some grease came out of bearing... hopefully not a problem but would love an opinion.

Otherwise here is the finished product:
Centric calipers and stop tech (non slotted/non drilled) rotors, ss lines from low range offroad, stop tech street pads. Stopping power improved - did not quantify. Bought most of it from rock auto. Blinged the calipers.

 

So I bled the brakes and all. But I have a super spongy pedal. It's really bad. I cam feel the pads gripping but I have no pressure behind it. Any ideas

 

Did enough fluid leak out that air may have gotten into the master cylinder? Might need a visit to a shop if so.
Are you using a vacuum bleeder?

 

I don't think i ran it dry. I topped off after each little bleed container. Unfortunately I don't think I gave that much attention to the first fill up.
