Best oil filter choice.

Soon will remove the aluminum canister cartridge oil filter and install the Baxter adapter for regular spin on filter, but which oil filter to get?

I got a ten pack of the oem toyota filters at some point - should be good for awhile. Can't remember where but I recall reading some study where they came out to be as good if not better than most of the aftermarket ones. Significantly better than some of the cheap aftermarket ones.

 

I think the OEM filters contain more filtering media than all the aftermarket versions=better filtering, its the same for OEM paper air filters they have 3 layers of media whereas the aftermarket usually have only 1 layer

Just be careful with filters longer than the WIX. You will be that much closer to the skid plate. I use WIX all the time

As long as is not touching the skid plate I will be fine. Mall speed bumps are small enough.

 

You will be happy with the set up. With the filter totally vertical you can fill it with oil prior to threading it on which will be around .2 quarts and then put 6 quarts in crankcase. Low oil pressure light will not even come on when you start it up. Lastly I would advise a few drops of loctite blue on the nipple prior to threading it in. This is not specified in Baxter instructions but will keep nipple from threading out when you change filter. A one inch 6 point deep socket will allow you to access adapter flange even with nipple in place. When you loosen spin on filter oil will pour down the side of the filter for a few seconds but it is very easy to catch it in a drain pan. Just some points which I have learned since I installed the adapter.

 

i wish they just left the oil filter where it was on top of the motor.

So far in 15000+ miles on it I have used only OEM cartridge filter.
Did you see any improvements moving to Baxter and spin-on Toyota filter?

 

I changed to the spin on for convenience. Much easier to do oil changes and filters are less expensive. My first oil change with the cartridge was a bear. Cartridge was over tightened and a PITA to change. Oil changes now are a breeze and completed in one half the time.

 

Got under the truck today and measured around 2" between the bottom of the WIX 51348 filter and the skid plate. Also watched the videos on the different filters and would agree the Toyota one appears to be the best, but WIX appeared to be right up there as well. The Toyota filter looks about 1" taller so it will work with 1" to spare. My concern would be if you hit something and damaged the skid plate. For me, I probably will stay with the WIX.

 

By chance do you have a part number for the baxter adapter?? this sounds like a great idea!!

Just making sure you guys realize that cartridge style usually has more dirt holding capacity along with a finer filter media. Toyota didn't put them on just to make oil changes difficult.

This is not correct. The spin on filter has more filter capacity.

 

Read this years ago. Dude did a great job on this. Always used a Toyota filter just because.

Toyota 90915-YZZD3 spin-on filter is a bit longer and has IDENTICAL filtering element inside like the cartridge AND it has a by-pass valve that the cartridge type (on tacos now) does not have.
Also the spin-on type has an anti drain back valve to keep more oil in the engine for easier and "wetter" start-ups that the cartridge also does not have.
