If you Google or search on TW for precleaners on snorkels, you can see how much dust and debris they collect.

So if the precleaner on a snorkel collects lots of debris the snorkel is obviously still sucking in pretty dirty air. The question I have, is that air cleaner coming from two feet higher up? Logic says it should be, but reality may be a different story.

I think it ruins , the look of your already nice looking taco for what it claims to do , by @ least 98% , cold air K&N just as cheap and easy your sister or mom could install it

I know if I had one it wouldn’t last long. A tree branch or something would rip it off.

    A few tweaks
Agreed. Snorkles, roof top tents and roof racks don't work well in the woods of PA. Never found much use for off road lights either - another aftermarket accessory to fail on the trail.

Exactly. I often end up in wooded areas where this wouldn't be a good addition. I don't cross (deep) water unless I have no choice. It really depends on what you do. That said, I wouldn't mind at least one ditch light (flood) and a light to assist with backing up in the dark or seeing for camping. Either in the bed or on a rear bumper, also flood.

I use mine primarily for dust. Crossed a bunch of creeks and stuff, but the snorkel I don’t believe ever came into play .
If OP runs a lot of trails and explores it’s worth it. Or if he just wants the look...also worth it !

It’s about the look, we know it and the look is cool.
The 1st gen Tacoma has an ECU and is limited to how much water you can go through before the ECU gets wet.
Definitely more than the new Tacoma.
The new Tacomas have electrical switches everywhere and it doesn’t take much to knock one of them out of service from water.
Old school vehicles that do not have an ECU can definitely benefit from a usable snorkel and can
    go plenty deep without failing.

Speaking from a 1st-gen perspective, the stock "fording snorkel" behind the passenger fender, is as high as I'd allow water to rise up to, which is say fender flare tops max. I'm sure Toyota had the ECU and such in mind when they engineered that thing as such.
Second, I did the "elbow mod" on mine because that fender forder and its elbow are restrictive. If you're gonna add all that extra snorkel to the already existing restrictive fender forder, I'd also do a "deckplate mod" so when you aint balls-deep in puddles, you can open the plate up and enjoy a freer air flow, especially when showing that snorkel off at the malls.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Hit up the young guy on this forum , don't remember name, thats rebuilding his 1st gen after water intrusion. A snorkel wasn't his problem.

It was actually designed for dusty conditions not water. I can tell a differance with it on. On second gens if you removed your fender liners the intake sticks right above the tire through the inner fender. Its easier to flood the engine than you think, atleast on the second gens

Will do, from the ones I’ve seen first hand, there is some gapping where the fender flares out. But you just fill it with black silicone

I just picked up an ARB Safari SS170HF on Amazon Warehouse deal listed as "Used - very good" but the description makes it seem like it's new with damaged box. I have bought several things like this and they have usually been new with damaged box, so I took my chances. $354.26 with tax shipped. If it looks like it has been installed / used, I can still return it. After reading this thread, I am undecided if I'll keep it.

I did just drive through Death Valley and was following some other tacos through thick enough silt that I had to stop in the dust cloud and wait several minutes in order to see more than 2 feet in front of the windshield. Once I got back to "town" and filled up the gas tank, I removed the AFE dry filter and banged it on the ground and so much crap came out of it, which reminded me that a snorkel would have helped a lot with this. I don't often drive with other people, so now I'm wondering if I should cancel my order and just keep stock with the nicer air filter (and spare in the tool/parts bin with me on trips).
