Just came across this thread, I just went through this with mine. I don't think the pump is what we have to worry about but the valves themselves. My valves failed and were horrible and had lots of water intrusion within the system, just like the tundra's. The tundra's had a bad air intake by design for the pump, with ours I think its condensation buildup within the system and it has no where to go. That being said I will probably eliminate the pump filter as well just to be on the safe side. Pictures of my valves are in this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/secondary-air-injection-switching-valve.381997/page-7

No authority here, but that seems like what I recall reading somewhere.

I have the 2.7, and have done the mod. Using a Uni filter, not the K&N product.

From what I know, you are correct. The '12's were the first with them, which is why they're most prone to issues and have the extended warranty. Had mine fail at about 38k - Valves and pump replaced at no cost. My failure was at the valves (which the majority seem to be), so the uni-filter mod was worthless.

So your failure was not related to foam filter deteriorating and being ingested into the system, but the actual control valves?

Correct. And I believe that's been the majority of people's issues, however they always replace both. I have heard some have had the foam filter issue, but it seems to be by far the minority.

My 2014 2.7 is no highway queen. I have had my pump under water several times, and once was stuck for a good 3 minutes with water over headlights. When I got home took pump all apart, aside from being wet, looked fine in there. I don't see what all the fuss is about?

Less to wrong and when doing a water crossing nothing to suck in water perhaps.
