I agree with the media comment, but not the downloading and uploading. Toyota put a lot of security on the ECU to stop exactly this from happening. That has been cracked, and in the true sense of the word, and that was the key in all of this, the modification of ECU binary file is a well known commodity that’s very similar for all ECUs.

So to answer this question, yes i can feel VVT come on around 3500 rpm. Like i said, never even noticed it before, but definitely can when I'm "looking for it". It must not be something they took into account for this tune. What does OVtune do in theres? Get rid of it completely, or just smooth it out?

Another update: Made it through a full tank of gas today and calculated my mpg. I went from averaging just under 13mpg pretty consistently to a tank average of 14.6. That is mixed highway/city, but mostly highway. These numbers might seem a little low compared to others, but i do carry a bed full of tools and drive on the faster side, so i never see best case scenario mpg's on any of my vehicles.

Also, no change in shifting as of now. Still feels like the day i picked it up from the tuner. Does anyone have an actual mileage it takes for the learning to take place on a stock truck? Just curious.

Normally will see degradation within 500 miles, but sometimes I have seen it take up to 1000 before I could really begin to notice degradation. Also depends on your driving style.
For example - if you don't get stuck in city traffic, stop/go, tons of redlights in slow zones, etc., and keep your foot into it, the "learning" will calibrate to something more aggressive. IF you spend the week driving back and forth during a slow moving rush hour, then take off to get out on the open highway on the weekends, in my experience it didn't know what to do with itself. It "learned" that I like to granny it b/c I rarely could give it heavy throttle and was frequently stopping - because if I drove any differently there'd be cars and people to hit and that's no good...

How’s that tune holding up? No issues? I was thinking about making an appointment have them do mine add a lift kit as well. I have no complaints about my drivetrain 17k on the clock just think the extra 25-30 horse would be nice!

No issues at all to speak of. Truck still feels great. I’m obviously pretty used to it now, but still happy I did it. Also since you mentioned it they did a great job installing my lift and are top notch for alignments which you’ll need after the lift.

I finally pulled the trigger and went to Gear One today. Very professional shop. Very happy with the feel of the truck. As of now I am all stock with the exception of the tune. Throttle is more responsive and the trans seems to shift like it is supposed to (haven't noticed any gear hunting). I have only put about 20 miles on the tune and will report back once I logged some more miles.

I’m sure they put a ton of work into the tune and it’s near perfect.

I got my gearone tune done back in June put on about 5000 miles since. Tune works great I can feel the extra power and better acceleration etc. however in third gear under WOT like when merging onto a highway the truck pulls all the way to redline shifts into fourth then cuts out like the fuel been turned off...back off the throttle a bit and all is good again. Anyone with the tune experience this?

I ran it for a while and then gear hunting started again. I threw the towel in and had them put it back to stock. $400 lesson for me.

Yeah they were good to me and offered me to bring it back in. Hindsight not wanting to not have control over what gets loaded into my truck. Not a shot at them just personal preference. As i originally stated they were very professional.

I really like the tune...it does what it’s supposed to do...I’m pretty sure I’m hitting the rev limit in third gear and the ecu is cutting the fuel. All other gears are fine at WOT just third. I’m in RI for the summer I’ll hit them up in September when I get back to PA. Thanks
