There now is a new software update similar to the one that the auto guys got. I've always had a surge with my '18 in second gear and the truck was annoying at times to shift. I purchased the OV tune and it made the truck acceptable to drive but still had the surge/stutter in second. I just did the update and it is a definite improvement even over the OV tune. My surge/stutter in second is gone. I've only driven the truck for about 10 miles so I'm hoping it doesn't come back. To get the update go on to your dealer and complain of a surge between 25 and 40mph and they will do the update for you. I'll get the TSB number later on. Sorry busy right now so maybe someone else can post a copy.

Here is the TSB info. Enjoy!

I've added the following info provided by forum member tonered for those that can't get the tsb done through the dealer.

Thanks again tonered for your efforts.

Alright. Here is a wholesale instruction set. Credit to @mstrbrc , @Ruggybuggy , and others. If you folks like it and it seems complete, we can ask Ruggybuggy to update the OP with it.

    Update Instructions:

The TSB T-SB-0058-18 Rev 1 is attached.

Download and install TechStream on a Windows 7 or 10 computer:
    http://blog.obdii365.com/2017/05/09/toyota-techstreamv12-10-019-free-download/
You will need a program that can unzip .RAR files. The key.txt file will be needed when prompted in TS for a password. Just open the key.txt file and copy and paste the contents.

That is a known, working version of TS for the 3rd Gens. This version will allow checking, monitoring, or customizing of 2016 and 2017 Tacos also. A later version is required for checking, monitoring, or customizing 2018s.

Download and install the drivers from Tactrix.com:
    https://www.tactrix.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=38&Itemid=61
The Tactrix unit can be purchased on Tactrix.com also. You just need the basic Tactrix OpenPort2.0 unit. No extra Mitsubishi orSubaru reflash adapters. You will receive a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 adapter with a miniUSB cable.

Before connecting to the Taco, plug the Tactrix cable into your computer to verify that the drivers recognize the cable. Open TS to test drive the program and pick the Tactrix connection from the drop down menu.

Attached are the CUW files for MT:

-- T-0033-18.cuw is for 2016 and 2017 Tacos with ECU IDs of 04B10, 04B11, and 04B12. Applying the update will give you 04B13.
-- T-0037-18.cuw is for 2018 Tacos with an ECU ID of 04B70. Applying the update will give you 04B71.

Place the one that is need for your Taco on the computer desktop.

    Use this checklist for updating:

:anonymous: Don’t use hacked versions of TechStream for an ECU update.

 Don’t use a virtual machine environment to do an ECU update.

 Don’t use Bluetooth or WiFi dongles for an ECU update (USB only).

 Do turn off Windows update service.

 Do turn off Windows system sleep functionality. Use the “always on” setting in power management pane.

 Do turn off USB power management for the USB port you’re using.

 Do plug the laptop into a wall outlet.

 Do hook up a battery maintainer to the vehicle during an ECU update.

 Do turn off all electrical consumers during ECU update.

    Open the hood.

Once you are ready to update your Taco do the following:

-- Key out of the ignition
-- Plug in the Tactrix to the OBDII port by your left knee
-- Double click on the CUW file on your desktop that applies to your Taco
    -- Follow the prompts exactly

    Enjoy!

For those looking to for a dealer near you that will do the update. Follow the links below. The information is provided by forum member jkcashin.

I have created a map of the places that will and will not do the SW update... can you add it to the first page post? Thanks!

You better be serious!!! If this is fake news I am gonna freak!

How did you find out about it?
What did you tell the dealer to get them to do it?
Also, should I mention there is a TSB?

I’m actually going to the dealer tomorrow for something else so I will definitely talk to the numbnuts that work in service. :)

I have that issue and am looking forward to the TSB post. Thankfully Toyota is paying attention to complaints.

Someone could just pay $20 or whatever it is for a 2-3 day TIS subscription and pull down the TSB. Done it a couple of times to get the TSBs posted to the forum. I’m an AT so no dog in his particular game but I’m very glad they are doing something about this for all... 3 years later

It's not a cruel joke. I was checking my own truck at work during lunch for any software updates and after I did the health check it showed that a software update was available. I performed the update and drove the truck home after work and was pleasantly surprised. The update covers 2016-18 and the tsb mentions it's a fix for the surge. I did check TIS for the TSB number when I got home but it's not posted yet so it must have just been released.
