    There needs to be a timing belt sticky. LOTS of questions about it and what else to do. Maybe just a list of links from older threads on the subject will suffice. Not bagging on OP as I just went through it a year ago.

    Lots of great info here, folks. I am picking up a 97 today with 217K on the clock, timing belt will be coming up again soon. I believe it's 10K over at present, how much can go wrong if I baby this for a month or two til I can get to it? I have heard that this is not an interference engine, so of course losing a timing belt would leave me on the side of the road, but being a non-interference engine I wouldn't expect any major catastrophe.

    I just did valve cover gaskets on a 1st gen Tundra with the 4.7 thats has 300k on the original TB and water pump. And I am doing a 2002 Taco next week that has 175k and never had the belt changed. Both are original owners. Some toyota owners think they can just drive them forever on just oil changes, and it sure seems that some of them are right, LOL.

    Should mention the only reason the tundra owner wanted the covers resealed was that the smell of burning oil on the exhaust manifolds gave them headaches, LOL. They werent interested in the TB job.

    Interesting thread... a lot things to change while you're there !
    wow... a lot of quite of expensive tools to do this job smoothly....
    A lot still running with the original WP TB.... ( I'm one of them ) ...
    If the budget allow me ( not right now ) , then the plan is to tackle this either by
    09-2020 ( 93,000 miles mark) and \ or
    02-2022 ( 115,000 miles aprox) on the 20th anniversary of the truck plus shocks , leafs , etc , etc
    ! :spending:

    End of day 2. Here is my list of things to buy outside of what comes in the ebay kit: 1) fan bracket, Aisin p/n
    $120 FBT004 AISIN FBT-004 Fan Pulley Bracket - Compatible with Select Toyota 4Runner, T100, Tacoma, Tundra
    FBT004, 2) AC compressor idler pulley, p/n
    $55 88440-04040 Drive Belt Idler Pulley
    88440-04040, 3) radiator drain plug o-ring 90069-08019, 4) I also replaced the two hoses that go to the oil cooler. 5) I also replaced the radiator cap. 6) dipstick tube o-ring. Don't forget to buy a new crank pulley bolt.

    Early on Toyota said 60k then soon upped it to 90k. That's still pretty conservative as you might be noticing. The change might coincide with the early upgrade of the crank pulley bolt and it's torque being upped from 184 to 217 lbs, another source of confusion.

    I don't know if those kits come with that bolt? It's intended for one-time use.

    No, not a one time bolt as far as I know. Just use the original. I did my TB at 160K and there were no alarming issues. I did all the standard stuff while in there too.

    EDIT: I was wrong (read below). Replace the bolt. :eek:

    Toyota says to replace the crank bolt. Yesterday was day 3 of my project. We got the new belt on, the crank pulley installed and the bolt torqued. Now, just waiting on Rockauto to deliver my new Aisin pulley bracket. Hope to finish the project on day 4.

    Well I stand corrected! Thanks for that! Edit to my last post, I had TOYOTA do the TB replacement at 160K, so I'm sure they replaced my bolt and I didn't know.

    Toyota does say that, they "say" lots of stuff. I would say it's more of a "better safe than sorry thing", it is a critical fastener after all. There is a fair number of cases of the bolt loosening (for numerous reasons) so Toyota could be just trying to cover all the bases.
    I have done a bazillion 1st gen t-belts over the decades. Half a bazillion I reused the bolt the other half were replaced, never a problem. Several of the trucks are now on their 3rd belt with the original bolt including mine and I use thread locker every time. These are not "torque to yield" fasteners. I have inspected, measured and compared new to old 6 ways from Sunday.

    Good info on the bolt. I was going to suggest if there is any concern, why not just get a bolt from ARP and be done with it? It's basically an aerospace-grade fastener grade 12 or something equally overrated to our purpose
