So ya. Techstream installed. Openport 2.0 purchased. CUW file downloaded. Start the process and it fails during the update. It initially showed me the current ECU version and what it would be after the update. Now it won't even connect.

cheap scan tool can't connect either.

    Engine just cranks the starter.

    me sad.

I thought I remember someone else in the same situation doing an OVTune update but I can't find that post.

    UPDATES
Mat @ OVTune offered to repair it 47
    Shipped to him 114
He fixed it on the bench 137
ECU on it's way back to me 180
ECU delivered. Will install after work. 187
Zombie ECU is back from the dead. She runs! 193
I took another stab at updating to B04 and it was successful. 219

Why are you updating your own ECU?

Does the check engine light come on with the key on?

Can you do a CANBUS check to see if its talking?

It's very likely that it needs an ECU. We have seen aftermarket mongoose cables and fake techstreams kill ECUs.

The new ECU will need to be programmed to the set of keys. The vin will need to be written into the ECU as well.

It's a thing at the dealership. Not in your garage.

Check engine is on. Trac light is on. Center display gives me a low oil pressure and brake override malfunction.

I did a check on CANBUS and it found of bunch of stuff. Anything in particular to look for?

I try to avoid dealerships. Sounds like I need to get to one now. I've done plenty of ECU reflashes. Just not on this particular vehicle.

Thousands of people have flashed their ECUs in their driveway without any issue. Me included. Get off your high horse.

Are you referring to ECU updates from Toyota or after market mods like OVTUNE?

Yeah, it does happen with techstream. Dealer bricked mine during an update for a TSB. They had to order a replacement ECU.

Both. I’m an OVTune user, and I flashed the latest TSB to my truck.

I wouldn’t recommend people doing stuff like this themselves. However if you choose to do so always make sure you have a solid internet connection, laptop power, and the vehicle has a charger. Any of those fail and it’s pretty common to brick any control module

@OVTune says it's pretty much impossible to brick an ECU by user error. If the flash fails, it reverts to the previous version. I'd put money on the fact that this brick would have occurred had OP had it done at the dealer or in his garage.

Subbed. I was getting ready to update mine to the newest ecu update but am worried about doing this. Fingers crossed for a good outcome OP.

Internet connection has absolutely nothing to do with it. No one ever bricked an ECU by not having an internet connection. But what you did forget is the most important thing, and the most common way to brick an ecu, and that’s the connection stability (hardware & serial to usb drivers) between ecu and laptop.
