What was the width of this trailer and what did you do for your side mirrors? Did you use extenders or just the oem mirrors? I'm finding that these travel trailers tend to be wider than the trucks at this length. I'm going to be towing a unit very similar to the one you pulled with a tongue weight of 560 pounds using the WDH and sway control bars. I really liked reading this since I haven't found anyone else pulling a unit comparable to what I'm going to be in a few weeks. I just bought a set of mirror extenders that I need to pick up yet. Hoping these will work well. Since the Gen3 trucks are only 75.2" wide with the mirrors and many units are 96" wide.

 

did you have it in "s" mode ? with that boat should be hunting gears in s mode. if your towing in d mode then that makes sense. that's a good way to burn up the torque converter. always tow in s mode.

 

Just under 800 miles last weekend. Was impressed with how well it towed. 12 mpg doing 65-70

Think it’s the way it’s sitting. Rear only dropped 1” loaded up. It also has 1.5” lift in the front only.

We tow a 14 foot, 3600 pound (dry) Dune Sport toy hauler. They only do custom builds so we only paid for what we wanted and it came out to less money than the same prebuilt trailer from other manufacturers. We have 15k AC / heat pump, largest single door fridge/freezer, two couch/beds, electric queen bunk, dual propane, dual battery, stove, microwave, lots of extra cabinets, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting. We didn't get an oven, awning, built in generator, TV. We have a Honda EU3000is that powers the AC and isn't even maxing rpm to do it. It came with 3 50 gallon tanks and we sometimes carry 20 extra gallons of fresh water if we to Underground exploring events where we need showers each night after getting dirty. I use a 10k Curt WDH and friction sway bar which was free with our trailer when we bought it. I run the bars nowhere near level so I'm not worried that ita rated too strong for the weight.

I have installed a large aftermarket transmission fluid cooler in line with the stock unit. I hit 235F in second and third gear when the torque converter is unlocked. If I pin the thermostat open, it only climbs to about 210F. You guys should consider pinning the thermostat when towing.

This is a full 96 inches wide inside so the thing is much wider than the truck. I have some cheap Amazon mirrors that help me see around it. It's also a sail due to its boxy and short shape. Every truck that passes me pulls me into it and then pushes me away. It's fun...

We are usually towing to remote places around Mojave and Death Valley or up Highway 62 to Yucca Valley where the 2 hills are majorly steep and I have to slow down a bit and run in 2nd gear. I have crawled it along some rough mining roads in 4lo.

Here is my 2017 TRD Sport 6 Speed Manual. I have a Tekonsha P3 and a Curt weight distribution hitch and I am pretty impressed with how the truck performs. The bed is loaded up with about 300lbs of various items as well, such as a spare set of wheels, tool box, fuel etc. The trailer weight is 1500lbs give or take a few hundred and the car weighs in at 2230lbs.



My father just got a 2018 TRD Sport auto with the 6ft box and I am going to start towing with that as well. I am curious to see how it performs vs the manual. Just from driving his truck around I think the tranny is going to be kicking down very frequently.

 

Hit and miss engines...

 

New-to-me tractor needed new tires, so I calculated all the weight and decided the Tacoma could handle it... well, I may need to add those OME leafs sooner than I thought, but the Taco did well for its first heavy towing job!

 

What's one of those thing weigh?

 

The tractor itself, with all fluids and rear tires w/ anti-freeze inside; is about 2300lbs, then add another 2000 for the trailer. It lightened the front end a bit and pushed mildly on braking (no trailer brakes on that one), but still controlled well and the MT didn't wheeze once. Adding an extra leaf out back and stiffening up the shocks would do wonders for towing that type of load.

 

Update completed the trip with the 27’ travel trailer weighing in loaded maybe 5100lbs. Total combined at 10,200 lbs. towed great. Ran at 1700-2500 rpms. Avg 10mpg each way. Wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Stopped on dime never had any issues. Using a Tekonsha 90160 Primus IQ Electronic Brake Control.
Speeds were averaging between 55-60 headed south most of the time due to the weather. It was very heavy rains and windy. While traveling back 95N through VA and MD I was running 65-75mph and yes that still gave a good 10MPG. Brake controller was set to 13 and was a perfect match. One additional item I added was trailering mirrors. My trailer was 96" wide and of course the Tacoma was only 75.2" wide to the outside of the mirrors. So Pepboys had a great deal for mirrors at only $15/each. Strapped them on and down the road.

 

I have a 19' aluminum Tracker Targa V18 combo boat. With trailer it's supposed to be about 3900 lbs. I usually get about 22-23 mpg without and with the boat I get about 16-17 mpg with speeds up to about 70 on the highway living in the mountains in Idaho (about 3900' elevation). No issues what so ever with towing.
