Yeah it almost shifts like butter now. So much better throttle response now. Drives pretty much like you would want any manual to drive. I was so disappointed in this truck for 1 year and 11 months but I just reved out first gear to over compensate for the shitty ECU to make up for second gear being so CRAP. Can't believe I drove such a crappy truck for almost 2 years and just accepted it. This ECU update made it so much better. And I can't believe that toyota came up with such a great fix but still screwing the manuals out of getting the update without having to beg and jerk off the service rep. I ended up not even trying my local dealer from all the stories of everyone being turned down so I bought my own tech stream cable. In my opinion it was worth the $190, but still toyota should have fixed this for us no questions asked.

Well, got my China cable in the mail yesterday. Took me a while to get it up and running because my computer is 64bit. Had to do some command line hacking to do so.

Anyways, I was able to do customizations and the such with it, but I’m not confident in using it to flash the update. There were a few communication errors when I was testing out what I could access in Techstream. So, when I get access to a Tactrix cable, I’m going to compare the two. Since it’s confirmed to work with the Tactrix, if they behave the same it could be a viable option.

I’m not saying it won’t work. But I won’t take the risk currently.

On a side note, if you only want to do customizations and the such, it’s a great, affordable option. AND, it is compatible with Techstream 13.00.022.

I did the same thing with the cable. I live 3 hrs from the dealer and we only have one dealer up here. I was not optimistic about spending a whole day driving up just to sit all day at the dealer. This would have cost me the same in gas and time as the tactrix cable. However it does sound like someone up here in AK just successfully had it done at my dealer which is good news for others.

I had a similar experience on my first trip in last Friday. Except they flat out lied to me...my BS meter must have been broken that day. Took it to another dealer explained it to everyone, and they went for it. If you can find another dealer, do so. The update is worth the second trip...and likely to be more successful than waiting for Toyota to update TSB wording.

    This.

When he brought up the TSB, I side-stepped the TSB and simply asked for the tevhstream to be hooked up for a health check. Success.

Ober-Information seems to be an issue here, especially because the tevhstream and the TSB are contradictory.

Mine is lower with mixed interstate and back roads...about 17.2mog....down from 18.5-19.0mpg; however, it is improving, so it is clear the ECM is relearning after the update. I'm thinking another 2 - 4 tanks of gas and it should have me figured out....hopefully I see another solid 1.5mpg rise and return to normal.

So I wonder if when they hook it up to Techstream if it notifies the dealer that based on the current code it should be updated? If so, I may try that approach just with a different dealer.

That would be a step in the right direction if I can at least get the other dealership to do that. They are gonna do my 25k soon. May not be for a few weeks to a month, but it still isn’t far off. I’m just apprehensive to try it at home. I know it probably is easy from everyone that’s done it, but I just can’t afford to have my Taco down if something catastrophic happened.

I flashed my own...but the conversation should be very simple. This is binary...

Does the tech stream ECM health check indicate a update available. Yes/no. If no, end.

If yes, what TSB? If they indicate AT only TSB then why does TS indicate update available?

Seriously, some SA or Foreman at a dealership is going to question a software process and throw into doubt ALL of TS processes? I mean if TS is wrong that takes away all confidence of TS and its domain in configuring any Toyota. This IS brain programming, if the dealership is saying they don't trust the process in this case it would call into question why they are doing ECM configurations on ANY Tacoma, manual or otherwise.

    I scratch me head

You can pry this flash out of my cold dead hands. I played support for a friend at the WA Gambler 500 this weekend:

    IMG_20180825_181848.jpg

    PANO_20180825_181924.jpg

I got to do most everything with the truck this weekend. I filled up in Enumclaw for the start, drove 336mi of byways, passes, wheeling, and snatch strapping, and then filling up in Packwood only to get 23.5mpg. The fuck?

    IMG_20180826_185445.jpg

After filling up, we bumped over Cayuse Pass, back to Enumclaw, and then north for home. This is what I got:

    IMG_20180826_185426.jpg

Coming back into Enumclaw, it almost cracked 29mpg. I was amazed.

A similar trip for the week(end) of Presidents Day, my tank MPGs was 21.5 and the best trip mileage was 22.5mpg over quite a distance including a good bit of terrain.

My operating theory for the TSB tune is that they programmed in more fuel when you get into the throttle or are on and off the gas and compensated by using less for constants settings?

Off road is much better and smooth as hell.

Also, DFCO, or whatever it really is, is way better offroad. I did some experimenting and found that the throttle would hang after giving it some gas and going back to coasting. Just brushing the brake pedal will cut the injectors smoothly and bringing on full engine braking. I was doing this in 2Hi, 4Hi, and 4Lo many times. Just like everything else with this tune, it is all very, very consistent and predictable.

I think I will go the Tactrix route for the next round. Thanks for the effort and report!
