Maintenance Schedule

Hey guys, I have a 2011 TRD Sport DC. I purchased her brand new and made it to 78k miles before getting the front brakes replaced (lots of highway driving). My mechanic said I could’ve made it another 500 miles or so. He said my rears won’t need to be replaced for a few more thousand miles. My question is this, other than getting the oil changed (and the front brakes) I haven’t done any other maintenance to the vehicle. I’ll be hitting 80k miles this week and was wondering if anything should be done to the truck. I’m due for an oil change at 80k. Thanks for your advice!

• change differential and transfer case oil

I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting but this is a good start and all easy to do yourself.

 

78k miles out of a set of brakes is horrible. You should be getting a lot more life out of them if you are highway driving. Do you tow a ton??
I have almost 85k on mine and I’m about halfway through the pads.

What indications were you getting that you needed new ones?

You shouldn’t need to replace your read drums for a LONG time. Like 150-200k. If you have a mechanic telling you, you need full drum replacements a few thousand miles outside of 78k you either have a problem with your brakes or your mechanic is a money hungry baffoon.

You need to pull your maintinence schedule and take a look at it. You are overdue for several things:
Spark plugs (every 30k)
Front, rear, and trans case fluid change (every 30k)
Engine air fiter every 30k
Cabin air filter every 20k (I cange once a year it gets nasty and they are cheap)

At 100k youll want to do coolant and transmission fluid and maybe power steering fluid.

I would do a brake fluid flush when you replace the brakes.

 

Thank you, this helps a ton. It's exactly what I needed! It seems I'm due for a lot of things. I do more highway driving than city driving. Except on the weekends when I drive on the beach to go fishing. I went in to see the mechanic because of a humming noise coming from the front end. It ended up being a wheel bearing. While he was replacing that he said the front pads were paper thin. I'm not going to worry about the rears at this point. I definitely need to have the fluids replaced. I opened up my glove compartment to take a look at the cabin air filter (it was suppose to be inspected back in Oct. 2017 during an oil change). There is NO WAY they (pep boys) inspected it. I'm also attaching pictures of my aFe Pro Dry S air filter. There is no way the rubber trim should look like that (7 years old) and there is suppose to be a lifetime warranty.

 

I dont replace my brakes till they squeek haha. Which they actually have a layer built in designed to squeek before you get to bare metal.

And thats a knarly cabin air filter.
I replaced mine at 25k interval recently and it was gross. I think I’m going to start changing sooner.

In regards to the engine air filters I run disposables just because the lifetime ones are a bear toclean and have to be oiled.
Id replace yours asap and replace. I can see how the rubber would look like that under heat for 7 years.

 

The manual that came with your truck has the recommended maintenance schedule. There are a lot of items you've missed over 80k miles if you've only done oil changes.

 

These don't need much. I have not done much to mine and goes well.

ujoints at 120k
Front brakes at 140k
battery after 7 years
some head lights and fog lights
air filter at 170k
steering rack and hub (accident related) at 180k
sway bar bushings at 190k

stock OEM Original plugs still fine

 

You have 190,000 on stock plugs? I wonder if they’ve seized to the head?

 

He takes a hands off approach to preventive maint.

I’m honestly surprized he changes his oil.

 

Almost 197k now. Took them out at 100k and gapped them. Still getting 420 miles per tank.

 

Greasing the ujoints goes a long way, specially if you plan on owning the truck for a long time.

 

Changed oil, rotated tires, new spark plugs, new front, rear diff and xfer case fluid. New engine air filter (still waiting to hear back from aFe about by rotting filter), new cabin filter. The mechanic suggested rear shocks. I figured as would hold off on that and do some good old TW research on a good replacement set.

 

Do this too and you'll really notice a difference!

I cleaned my MAF sensor yesterday with that CRC MAF cleaner. Next free weekend I’ll tackle the throttle body. I thought it was a little more involved, but those pictures make it look pretty easy. Thanks!

 

Update: aFe reviewed the pictures of my Pro Dry S air filter and are sending out a warranty replacement.

 

I cleaned out the throttle body according to that link "EatSleepTacos" posted above. Pretty straightforward and easy to do. I haven't noticed MUCH of a difference yet. I know lots of guys have said they felt like they were driving a new truck after cleaning the TB. I still have a 1-2 sec hesitation off the line. The other day I was driving on the highway and had to pass someone. It was almost like the engine took a 1-2 sec deep breath before accelerating. It's that hesitation that I'm still concerned about.
