I'm currently sporting just a plain Delrin knob that my brother was going to toss in the trash, when he returned his BRZ to stock before trading it in. I never thought weight would make a difference, but it's WAY too light.

 

and $60 is pushing it, i gave $40 for the one i have now " no cash value" coin on a black gloss ball...i hear weight makes it better but i've never really given it much thought either..mainly the reason i got the one i have now is i never plan on getting rid of this truck and i like classic arcade games

 

Same here. I don't feel any difference between the stock knob which is weighted a bit and my plain lightweight knob (162g) from @7r41lbr34k3r . To be sure, I drove around with no knob just to see if I would miss shifts or not like the feel.

But then, I might just have a crappy hand-dyno?

 

LMAO hand dynos... which do you prefer @tonored? weighted or lightweight? i get a little concerned when trying to find one, considering they aren't that cheap to begin with and i don't want to be stuck with something i don't like....i've owned 8 toyota trucks with MT in my life and they all had the standard shift knob, this is only truck i've ever changed out because it felt way to big for my hand..

 

I have one from Getta Grip...was my first little mod when I got my '12 last August. Lot of options and such. Not sure if anyone else on here has used them...haven't heard/seen much.

The delrin knob is very lightweight, yet big at 2.5in diameter. I have large-ish mitts though and prefer it as light as possible. It works for me for some reason? I believe someone weighed the stock knob and it was something more than a half pound (500g)? I could be wrong? I'm going from faulty memory. I liked that the stock knob was leather and felt decent.

I didn't mind the stock knob until I tried a 2.5in diameter knob that I 3D printed. It was around 200g and felt way better, mainly because I could wrap my whole hand around it. It felt like a ball and socket joint. The surface wasn't as nice as it could have been even after a lot of sanding, so I asked @7r41lbr34k3r to make me a plain one. It is smooooooth and is only getting smoother.

You might ask Rick about something smaller in diameter that matches your other MTs?

 

@tonered i probably will get a more weighted one eventually, just to see if i'm missing out on something that would make shifting smoother...@zjcas it is kind of hard to find something that doesn't belong in a hot rod or something a teenager would have, i like simplicity while being subtle enough to make a difference..i'll check out the link

Searching, I don't see any post from you in that thread. For whatever reason, it helps with shifting more than anything.

Also next week, I should have a Toyota elbow in hand to try the clutch accumulator delete.

 

i tried 2 times with the nearest dealers to me, ( i live 20 min from one and 40 min from another) both gave me the run around and said they haven't had anyone bring up any issues with their trans. i brought in a copy of the TSB that was posted and highlighted the reference about the MT's neither showed any interest in helping even talked to multiple people about the issue asked the service manager to drive it and he will see he said " i don't drive vehicles sir i can have someone else drive it" wouldn't even let me take him for a drive, pretty much gave up on both dealerships, so my hands are tied till i can order me a cable and do it myself, people around me aren't really receptive about lending a hand or talking about their trucks when i ask about them..i didn't post about it because i didn't see the point... but alas one day it will be fixed...as far as the smoother shifts i try to control what i can so i don't spill my coffee or give someone whiplash, a weighted one might be my answer for the time being...

 

What a ridiculous situation. I'd say to sit tight, betting that an MT version of the TSB will drop soon. "Soon" more in a Toyota time frame, not the typical TW time frame.

It wasn't bad before, when it required me to always be on my toes and never try to phone-in an easy shift. It is now butter.

I did it with a borrowed Tactrix cable before some local folks got their own. If you want to go down the route, let me know. I can try to hook you up.

 

yeah its stupid for sure but the truck does what i need it to do when i need it to do it but smoother would be better, i can wait man no biggie thank you for the offer though.. hopefully toyota will get the memo and do something about it all but til then i sit and drink coffee and enjoy my truck

Haha! Yep. Getting the line cut, bent, and flared with adapters proved to be too much of a challenge for my feebleness and my friend's ability to get his damn tool back.

RedBeard1's suggestion about the elbow ("way") kicked me over the edge. His confirmation that the brake parts use the same thread as the clutch bits pushed me over the edge.

There is an accumulator on the clutch line near the slave cylinder. It acts like a damper that reduces the clutch throw a bit, slows the engagement, and kills all the feelz. A lot of MFGs (that still sell MTs) use these to help noobs learn to drive them.

On the older 2nd Gens, folks could install a simple coupler to eliminate the accumulator since the clutch lines were either flexible or had enough slack. I was trying to make a section of line to scab in. Redbeard1 posted that he installed an elbow that is used on the brake lines as a short cut on his 3rd Gen. The accumulator makes a 90deg turn in the line. He grabbed the part from an 80s Toyota Pickup. It looks like they still use the same one on our 3rd Gens. I'm just waiting for that part (elbow / way) to come in and will give it a shot.
