E85?

Can the new (2010) Toyota's use E85 (85% ethanol / 15% gasoline)? I'm guessing not since the gas cap doesn't say it's ok. The place I buy my fuel just started carrying it and the price has been around $1.80. I want to give it a try if the Tacoma can drink it. My buddies that have used it say the only noticable difference is a slight decrease in milage. I know that if your vehicle is not approved for it using it will badly damage your fuel system and possibly your motor.

 

2010 tundras and sequoias have the option, not tacomas

If you are set on it Allan Phillips Racing has a kit you can install to run E85 It involves installing new injectors as well as an ECU tuner and exhaust cam gears.

I got almost 50 whp from converting a 2.0 LSJ motor (cobalt) into E85 and the fuel economy went down about 20% as well. For us, it was as simple as changing the injectors and the adjusting the scaler for the injector flow rate.

 

there are cheaper options for the taco. The nice thing about the APR kit is you can still run normal gas if you want to with no ill effects.

why would you want to?! you will get 20-25% less MPGs as E85 has 25% less energy content than E10 (regular pump gas)

 

Running E85 stock? NOOOO...

With some fuel system modifications? Yes.

Practical? Probably not. Depends on your preference.

Go check out Dually's Drop Taco. He's running E85...but just about nothing under his hood is stock.

 

All depends on how much e85 costs if its cheap enough then it will save you money otherwise its just a higher octane fuel option.

I was looking at this from a cost/benefit angle. I use this truck for a Land Survey Crew. It logs +- 550 mi./week. Modifications to use it aren't worth it. Does anyone know if E85 compatibility is in the works for Toyota? The fact that it is std on most American brands and not on most Jap. brands makes me wonder about the long term effects on the plastic/rubber stuff. Could just be politics. FYI there are several new plants in Ga. that are making it out of pine tree limbs/tops that used to be waste. John Deere even makes a machine specifically for gathering the stuff.

 

The fuel system can handle E85, well all but the injectors....the ECU is the next thing, the programming needs to reflect the change in flow and injectors. I am sure in time, they will introduce a model thats compliant. You can refer to post #5.....you'll have to do your own cost analysis to see if adding the mods are worth it.

that is a prime exampe of why you shouldnt use it. if it were truly as good as it is marketed, why arent the japanese cars built to use it?

 

Not a political thing, it's factual.

E85 is not green and will not net better gas mileage. Unless your vehicle is equipped to handle it (it's highly marketed so it would say so in the owner's manual), you shouldn't try it. Seals and lines will be destroyed over time, and the equipment controls cannot compensate for it.

 

What about stainless steel valves? Does the tacoma have them from the factory or not? If not I wouldn't mess with it unless someone makes aftermarket stainless valves. E85 is a great option especially when gas prices rise and it runs cleaner and better for your engine with correct mods of course. Downfall would be that you do get less miles per tank but when the overall price is cheaper and you get more power then it's a no brainer that it's better. Also they make an aftermarket gas tank for the tacomas that holds a higher capacity of fuel which would be ideal for e85 conversions. If anyone knows about the factory valves I'd be very interested to hear the answer.

 

Yes ,it is politics . It's about controlling you and what you will do ,per "them" . Running alcohol based fuels is not the answer and it is a detriment to all combustion engines . China's not "green" , nor Russia and alot of other countries .It's only a policy for non-Socialist / Communist countries . The Earth is going to go through it's normal "Climate changes" ( notice how "they" changed the terminology...they started this fiasco as "Global warming" then , they changed it to the present BS ) regardless what "man" does or doesn't do....don't be fooled by Gov . ( just like, "they" have WMD...weapon's of mass destruction....then come to find out Iraq didn't ) . Cheers.

 

The cornhole lobby is why e85 is even offered anywhere in this country.
They are trying to use the money you are paying for new vehicles and fuel in those vehicles to put money in their pockets....and that's just the tip of the eco-iceburg.
