Towing Harness Relocating Bracket (T.H.R.B.)

How was the fitment?
Is there anything where I can improve?

 

Fitment was great and went on smoothly. It's so simple yet badass that I don't see how you can improve it. Maybe put a Toyota logo on it? I don't know. Lol

 

I'll keep it in mind.

What matters is that your harness will be out of danger.

 

Man, I should have had one of these on my last trip. Does anyone have a full towing harness that the THRB relocates? Mine is mangled... see my want ad. Would like to get a replacement that I can just plug in. The plug is critical, the bracket that goes on the hitch to hold the plug in factory location is not critical...

If you're unable to find a factory Toyota plug this might help:

It's a Honda harness identical to Toyota's and it's only around $50 (vs. $175 from Toyota).

You will need to swap out a few pins, not hard at all.
For about $50, 2 hours of your time and one THRB you'll be golden.

Got mine installed, on the whole I like it, fit and finish is good. However, you asked for comments. I suggest the holes used to attach the THRB to the truck be drilled and tapped all the way through to the bungee cord opening. As it is now you supply 3/4 inch screws. The truck bracket is about 1/8 inch thick and its weld nut is another 1/4 inch thick (see picture above). This results in the THRB being held to the truck by 1/4 - 3/8 inch of screw thread. I attempted to use 1 inch screws, and that is when I discovered the holes were not deep enough to accommodate a 1 inch screw.

I am still thinking about drilling out and tapping the THRB but it started to rain and so its currently installed stock w/no mods.

Edit: Andres, you supply SS screws. The THRB is aluminium. I suggest to include a note recommending a drop of blue Loctite or a dab of anti-seize on the screws.

 

What bolts do I need for these? Just got mine today and the stock bolts dont work

 

Mine came with 4 - 3/4 inch SS hex head. I believe 1/4 20 thread. Please post pictures, how do they not work?

 

Stock bolts were too big. I bought some that worked. I bought mine used with no hardware.

 

Mounted mine to the bumper on the floor in the garage...........now bumper on floor in garage needs to migrate to the truck!

 

Correct, it is not designed to accommodate 1" screws.
Are you aware that the screws provided were 1/2" and 3/4?
The 1/2" screws should be located at the harness molding and the 3/4" longer screws should be located at the frame holding the bracket.
1/4" to 3/8" thread length is ideal to hold the bracket in place.
There isn't any advantage of extending the length of the thread past a given length, there's a formula to calculate the thread strength but in this case the screws aren't taking any crucial load force they're simply holding an aluminum piece in place.

Not contradicting you, just pointing out stuff.
In fact I enjoy these small mechanical debates, exercise for the brain.
Personally I don't like the idea of the holes going thru the bracket as debarring a threaded exit hole onto a side that's not flat is a b!tch to deburr.
If I decide to extend the length of the thread I may as well move the bungee cord holes back so there's more material to extend the depth of the thread and the holes don't have to go thru.

Appreciate the feedback, good call on the anti-seize.

Yes, I got the 1/2 and 3/4 inch screws situated correctly. I didn’t drill through and replace the 3/4 with a 1 inch screw. The way the hole is offset I was concerned about weakening the whole structure if I drilled through. What I did do was grind down a 1 inch screw and created a nominal 7/8 inch screw. I picked up 2 maybe 3 threads.

 

My plug was pretty hammered. I was able to use a little redneck engineering and sandwich it together with the factory bracket for time being while I wait for my replacement. Lol, it’s ugly as hell right now but it’s out of the way.
