Maybe it's a flow issue. Higher rpms when's downshifting means faster spinning water pump . Pretty sure the truck cuts fuel when downshifting. So the air pumping through the cylinders is probably having a cooling effect

A friend of mine with a heep has been having the same issues since the trail, jeep just called him to let him know that his thermostat was sticking. Looks like I'll likely be dropping the truck at toyota on Friday

What’s a thermostat cost? Can you just replace it yourself and see if it fixes the problem? Dealerships are expensive, but it might be powertrain warranty if that’s the case.

Thermostat is probably cheap. Getting to it is a different story.

My wife's Camry had an over heating issue that took me hours to figure out. I checked all the sensors, all the fuse's, switches and replaced the thermostat and hoses while at it. I checked to see if the water pump was working and took the New thermostat out to see what would happen and guess what, the new thermostat even though was opening in a pot of boiling water did not work. In the end I replaced the thermostat again and problem solved.$.02

Jeep just got back to my friend and informed him the thermostat was not the problem, they are now testing his head gasket. If my issue is anything along the lines of his, I feel that my 100k mile powertrain warranty should cover it

No, I even boiled a pot of water and place it in it and watched it slowly open. I don't know what fully opened looked like but it sure was not enough to flow the coolant fast enough. I would have never thought it could be a new thermostat but that was all that was left too do so i took a chance since it only cost a few dollars.

I once changed a thermostat, just for maintenance, not because it was broken. So I curiously decided to put a little butane torch on it just to confirm it was still working. Well I got side tracked installing the new one and the thing blew up in the garage . Copper and wax everywhere haha.

I had a 2 year old truck with overheating problems. Turned out the radiator needed a flush. Never found out what clogged it or how.

That's exactly the answer that OP needs to be dreading since he's taking it to the dealership, because that's a maintenance procedure not a warranty repair. Since he's already tried it, there shouldn't be much to worry about, though.

Beats a blown motor which how mine ended. Before the "clogged radiator" diagnosis the mechanic just slapped on a higher pressure cap to prevent boil overs. That "worked" but didn't lower the temp and when all was said and done it needed a new motor, new radiator, and new heater core since the motor got cooked and like our tacos had plastic tanks on the radiator and heater core which weren't designed for the higher pressure.

Whatever it is, fix it soon and fix it right. Don't drive it running hot.

Why would a powertrain warranty cover damage to a head gasket caused by overheating due to operator negligence?

Negligence means failure to exercise due care. Not sure what you see that I don’t, but looks like our guy here has not crossed that line.

Yeah soon as he did more than spray it down with a hose. Taking it apart to "fix the issue" and not being able to doesn't mean its on Toyota to sort out now for free. Sucks for OP and I get the DYI mentality but it might come back to haunt him here.
