Behind the rear of the heads there is a coolant pipe that transfers coolant between the two cylinder heads. The pipe seems to be molded from two pieces of plastic that are sealed together. The sealing area has developed coolant leaks of some of the tacoma's. Make sure you check it before your powertrain warranty ends because it's going to be a fair amount of labour to change it.

I don't have the issue "yet" on my '18 but have seen it on two other 3.5's. Toyota super long life coolant reacts with oxygen and a small leak will appear as pink growth as it evaporates so you won't see it dripping under the vehicle.

This makes me think that i need to look for this , as i have wondered for a while now why it looks like my coolant bottle has been a 1 inch or so low ?

I need to take a serious look because ive smelled coolant from day 1 but could never find a leak. I never thought to look on the back of the heads...

Ha, yet another thing :(. I too feel like I’ve smelled coolant from day one but with no leakage underneath assumed it was all good but I’m definitely using coolant somehow... grrrr

An inch could easily be fine as the level will vary slightly with temperatures and depending on how much is in the hoses and whatnot. It’s recomended to squeeze on the tubes you can access to get a true reading of coolant levels. Mine is quite a bit lower than that but still above the LOW line but a few inches below the fill line where it was a couple of months ago.

The ones I saw were leaking along the seam of the pipe in the middle. It never gets to the point of running out. You will see a pile of pink growth where the leak is happening.
