I have talked to corporate and been to the dealer twice for them to check it out they measured the paint thickness and the readings were all off some spots were high some spots were low and now they are getting quotes on fixing it but they expect for me to accept that they are only going to paint the parts where the clearcoat is failing I think that’s unacceptable considering pretty much half of my truck is being painted you might as well just paint it all because it will never match so now I’m fighting corporate about this and I’m waiting to hear back from the regional manager on whether they are going to paint it all properly or buy my truck back ! I would suggest anybody with a blazing blue pearl Tacoma purchased around that time definitely keep an eye on your paint !

That looks horrible. Hopefully they take care of you. Seems like tons of guys with BBP have this issue.

This sucks all around, no bones about it. I'd let them have a chance to make it right before getting too upset though. See how well they can blend the new paint. No, its never ideal to have 40% of your truck painted at a different time than the base coat, but it is what it is.

I'm no body shop expert, but I had a similar issue with a factory defect on my 2012 ram and they didn't need to touch the base coat (the color) just lightly sand and re clear. Once done, the new clear coat will have more texture for a few months, but will settle flat like the rest. At least that's what happened with my truck.

Seems like a common problem with your color. Do a quick search and you'll see.

I'm sure the dealer will make it right

If they give you the option to buy it back honestly I would go that route unless your happy with the truck otherwise.

So we have BBP clear is failing & Silver/Quicksand trucks are rusting in door jams. Stellar job Toyota.

Yeah but considering they only want to do half of my truck and leave the rest alone no thanks I rather get my money back or a new truck I didn’t pay 40k for a half ass paint job you know it’s just sad that Toyota is losing their quality like this I know people with first gen tacos and better paint then this

take it to a private Autobody shop for a free evaluation on the condition, they will give u the straight scoop and get a estimate from them on the proper fix to take back to the dealer. maybe the paint is fine just the clearcoat needs to be replaced.

I'm curious OP not knocking you but do you wax/seal your paint? I'm not saying this happened because you didn't but wondering if you did and it still faded. Definitely a paint quality issue.

I would not accept a repaint. I would go for the buy back. When you go to trade it in down the road that repaint will be obvious and you will lose out on some money on the trade.

Not sure if you bought it new, but it's a 17 year model and its September 2018. If they bought it back I'd be shocked. I personally would not want to keep it either. At this point I'd push for an above market trade value on a new truck. Now you have to be careful with this because they could give you more for your trade and screw you on the new truck or the financing, so you gotta get value of the trade (above market), out the door price of the new truck (minimum $2k below msrp) and interest rate if you finance it. I'm sure this is not want you want to hear but I think it's the most realistic outcome, looking at it with no personal investment.

While a buyback would be nice, very doubtful that's an option. I would push for a full clear coat re-spray. If done correctly, your truck will look brand new and should stay that way for years.
