Want to get better gas mileage!

Are there add on we could do to get better gas mileage?

 

What are you getting? I have almost 1000 miles on my 08 and after 3 tanks, avg. 14-15 MPG... combination highway and street, no mods at this time. That's about the same as I got with my 2006 F-150.

 

So.... what is your mileage??

Got to wait until it "breaks in", I didn't see a big change until 21,000, but most see 5000-8000.

 

I'l back this statement up. I have a good friend that works in the Toyota dealership as the parts manager. Very smart educated guy. He says that the Tacoma engines don't even really start to break-in until they hit 20,000 miles.

As far as mileage goes, I'm in the same camp with my I4 5-speed as Jedi. I average 26.2 mpg. My highway mpg has been as high as 32 mpg and my city daily driving pegs out at approx. 24 mpg.

I have a ScanGauge II and it helps me keep tabs on my real-time mpg. It's not exact, but it's pretty close. I also never rev it above 2500 rpms for the most part.....rarely has it seen 3,000.

It's absolutely amazing to watch the gas mileage meter go drastically upwards when I draft behind a semi or a large bus by about 20 - 30 feet. I go from 28 mpg @ 65 mph all the way up to the mid 44 - 45 mpg @ 65 mph.

Cruise control helps greatly, too.

 

I suppose get about 18 mpg. But I just feel like my truck is a bit of a gas hog. I had a for 02 Explorer before I bought my Tacoma and it got far more miles to the gallon than my Tacoma.

 

I hope you don't do that as a normal practice. You'll get great gas mileage sure, but it's pretty dangerous to draft like that. There's no way you could stop in time at that speed if that truck/bus had to make an emergency stop. Chances are you won't even be able to hit the brake before you hit the truck/bus. At 65 mph, you're traveling at about 95 feet per second. You'll cover 20 feet in about 1/4 of a second and 30 feet in about 1/3 of a second. You also can't see any road debris that might cause extreme damage and the force of a re-tread coming apart can throw strips of heavy steel-belted rubber through your windshield when they separate.

The risk to your truck and your life isn't worth the few dollars you'll save in gas. Besides, semis and buses almost always win in a crash.

 

Try to keep the truck rolling in between lights as much as possible and don't punch the gas. This is the key to getting awsome fuel economy.

i just came across this and im still doing some research to see if im going to buy it. check out; www.gfchips.com . they claim that your tacoma(or any other vehicle) will get 4 to 7 mpg. increase and up to 60hp. increase. now im not sure about this but im still looking into it. they also claim it takes minutes to install and anyone can do it. if you find out any info on this please let me know. and to top it off it only costs $70.00. im a little leary on this one. tacojack

Well said, plus if there's any dirt on the road it basically sand blasts the front of your truck due to 18 tires kicking up gravel.

If you want better mileage, get a prius, you bought a truck and you will get truck mileage. Most people get in the 18-20 range with the V6 and 25-26 with the I4. There is no magic solution to get better mpgs. Drive like there is an egg under your gas pedal, and pray Muammar al-Gaddafi gets overthrown soon.
